Does anyone work from home in a NHS admin role

Teacake22 · 10/12/2022 22:29

Been a SAHM for the last 5 years. Looking to return to work part time next year but looking to work from home.
I am currently looking into what is out there, but thought I’d post on here to see if anyone worked from home in a NHS role.

Thanks.

Hi OP
I work for the NHS 'hybrid' but mostly remote in a band 6 position. But the admin/customer service roles can also be done from home, although we do not offer full HW contracts

Thank you for your reply @JillyBoel22 that’s very useful. It’s great to know there are some possibilities.

😊

@JillyBoel22 can I ask what your role is?

yes, I’m finding a lot of the NHS jobs where I am are wanting staff in the office.

I wouldn’t mind one day going in and the remainder wfh.

Thank you

My oldest friend works from home doing clinical coding part time. It was a steep learning curve but she enjoys it.

Notonyournellykelly · 21/12/2022 17:21

A colleague of mine did this before she came to my work. She did something like scheduling procedures. She found it very stressful, but she says she is winding down for retirement now so at a different stage to you. She doesn't have any particular qualifications afaik, so think it's an option for anyone who is drawn to that sort of work

HiyaCaath · 21/12/2022 17:38

I do, I'm bored shitless with it.

makingarunforit · 21/12/2022 19:45

There is still an awful lot of paper in NHS admin - far more than anywhere else!!! That is why they want you in the office.

Tech set up in our trust is bloody awful as well. I'd look elsewhere if you want to work from home.

Dinosaurdrip · 22/12/2022 13:37

I have wfh full time as a clinical coder for just over a year. I am in North Yorkshire and the hospital I work for is in Devon so definitely no office visits! I had already done my training and passed my exam with a local trust but there are definitely trainee posts out there wfh too.

DontFeatureMeOnSocialMedia · 22/12/2022 14:17

You could also consider local government admin. I'm in social services admin and our IT systems are far superior to my NHS colleagues 😂 I'm mostly WFH. I go in once a week at the most.

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 22/12/2022 14:20

I do
I work 4 days a week
2-3 in the office and 1-2 at home depending on what is needed that week
Some departments expect their staff in all the time tho but we have moved offices as have several other departments and we have to book a "hot desk" to go in

All our new staff work in the office during their probationary period tho it's in the wfh policy as is it not being a childcare solution - it states children's care should be sourced as tho you are in the office as they had issues with people with kids running round on teams calls etc

Teacake22 · 22/12/2022 22:07

Thank you all for your very helpful replies. It’s definitely got me thinking.

@Dinosaurdrip can I ask, is the training intense? Do you enjoy the work?
I will look further into this.

@DontFeatureMeOnSocialMedia thank you 😊 I will look into local government posts. For some reason I thought these posts were office based now.

@OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside ideally looking for something part time so I can drop kids off at school and nursery and collect later. Even if just a year or so.

I totally get not using it as childcare.

thanks everyone, will give it all serious thought.

@Teacake22

Hopefully you find something suitable soon.

Dinosaurdrip · 23/12/2022 02:00

@Teacake22 there is a 4 weeks standards course which is quite alot to take in, some areas being harder than others. Then some of the actual work can be hard too but so long as you work with a good team and can ask questions, you can generally come to a happy concensus in the end.

Longrangewalker · 23/12/2022 02:09

I work for an NHS integrated care board, so not for a Trust or provider. We still have an office, but they've closed most of our pre COVID offices and we work almost entirely from home. I think most of the roles in our organisation are band 7+, but there are still admin roles and they are primarily WFM and flexible around school pick up etc. Might be worth looking at an ICB to see if they have anything suitable.

Sausageandchips123 · 09/10/2023 22:32

Did you trust sent you laptop by courier! I’ve been offered a perm
wfh role the base is 5 hours away and they are adamant I need to be on site to get my laptop and complete induction!?

Cakeandslippers · 09/10/2023 22:36

I'd suggest looking at the commissioning support units (CSU) or the Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) in your area. Both have loads of remote opportunities. Id avoid looking too far afield as even in remote roles you might find you have a monthly in person meeting / get together. Hospitals and community services are much more likely to require you work on site. Local Government is another option, quite a lot of remote / flexible working in many local authorities. Good luck!

itsamedicalmystery · 09/10/2023 22:40

Me! Senior 8c post, so fed up of being at home, take any opportunity I can to go to face to face meetings. Works great in the school holidays though as mine are in their teens so don't take any looking after.

Sausageandchips123 · 10/10/2023 07:11

That’s what I’m worried about they won’t budge over the on site for induction which makes me wonder if there is an expectation further down the line for me to travel?

Sausageandchips123 · 16/10/2023 20:02

Did they arrange a remote working contract for you?

Dinkleberrys · 17/10/2023 17:42

It's ridiculous. Clinicians can't get hold of remote workers such as procurement etc, pyjama party job and yes it's boring.
