I think I would like to start a career in HR but literally I have no idea if this is possible when I'm 42 and have no experience in this field . Any thoughts would be appreciated

No HR qualifications or no qualifications at all?

It’s not easy to get into HR even if you do have qualifications if you don’t have experience!

Generally, a good route in is to be doing an adjacent role e.g admin and pick up some HR responsibilities as part of that role and then move into HR.

My route was via training into L&D and then was sponsored to do qualifications from there.

OP what work experience do you have? That might help people give you advice on how you can use that to help move you into HR

HR Director here. Most of my team found HR through other roles and transferred across. I have recently employed someone with transferable skills but no formal HR quals into a fairly senior role and she’s doing brilliantly.

So it is possible.

I have a degree and a professional qualification in another field and decided I would like to move into HR. So I took a year out to take a one year masters degree in Human Resources. But I am early 50s and nobody was interested in me for entry level HR roles, I have so far not even managed to find an HR recruitment consultant that will speak to me.

I think my only avenue would be to start a role in a company and then see if I can transfer internally.

In my late 40s I worked in an Hr department as a temp then got a level 5 qualification during lockdown. I’ve been fairly successful in getting interviews for HR Assistant roles and just started a new job a couple of weeks ago.

Not easy and I found progressing even harder (although this was post kids)

I've found it's easy to get pigeonholed at a particular level unless you have a fab boss/ culture

Luckily I managed to get to manager level but it was a struggle

What do you like about HR?

what work have you done before?

If you're customer/ client focused you may senjoy the advice side. I used to love thos , miss ot a bit now I'm leading a team of advisors so don't have my.own clients.
