Can't make out boss

Started a new job 2 months ago. My manager was keen to recruit me, kept hinting at the job and had previously supported me and given me good appraisals. A former manager said he was delighted with my work as a contractor. Never fell out with him. In the last week, everything appears to have changed. Whilst small talk is not required, manager is extremely unapproachable (rest of the team is great including supervisors). When I give suggestions to problems between sites that I work at I get a snappy response in front of team members. Also thinly veiled digs at my performance the 'sister site' of where I work (and problems there). I am not defensive about this, as I haven't been responsible for the problems there but would have appreciated a one to one rather than this passive-aggressive situation. Former Manager also had to ask them to help me downstairs the other week which I thought was a bit strange as he doesn't acknowledge my presence as a worker or even say good morning. Manager doesn't look me in the face for most of the time. I tell myself we are all there for the money but I am extremely hurt and confused by the contradictory behaviour; sometimes the manager is smiley and has helped me before but appears to be extremely awkward around me. Any suggestions to improve the relationship is much appreciated as I'm extremely hurt and confused.

Is there a chance that as a contractor you were earning more money than him? Some people in staff positions do not do well in negotiating salary increases.
If this is the case he’s a dick but also maybe he does not want to appear to nice as if he’s dependent on you.

Either you say something directly or ask your previous manager? Could they be hoping you take on your manager's role? I've been in this situation and I ended up leaving as this person made my life miserable. I'd obviously slighted her somehow (didn't know why) and she was just plain rude. Made life so rubbish.
