Have you ever walked out off a job?

Been at my current firm 7 months. I get treated like shit. I'm on the verge of walking out. Curious to know if anyone's actually done it?

I did once, but I was self employed and, therefore, didn’t have a contract. I also did not have to give any notice, of course, so it was a bit different.

Try to hold on in there if you can…always better to have another job to go to and to follow the right channels

When I was about 19 I worked at M&S, doing Xmas temp work. It was the secons of three jobs I had at that point and I was exhausted. My shifts at M&S started at 5am and I'd easily be at my other jobs past 7pm, sometimes quite a bit later if I had an odd day where they overlapped.

Had a monstrous manager who, on this day, set me about 7 different tasks. Fine, except ALL of them she insisted were PRIORITY. Nowadays I have the maturity to say "Well, I can only prioritise one thing at a time so give me a hierarchy of tasks". Back then with my exhaustion, lack of patience/experience and a smidge of "fuck you", well, I just...left. I had many phone calls and angry voicemails, all of which went unanswered and I care not a jot to this day. She was a terrible manager and that job was not worth the stress.

Several times - as a headstrong teenager working in atrocious jobs in awful (illegal) conditions.
Not as an adult. Depends how much you would really need the reference, your financial status - can you stay afloat until you find something else?

Priminister · 29/11/2022 20:49

I walked out of a temp job. I had been brought in to replace an admin person who had been sacked but was popular with the rest of the staff. Despite the fact I was a total stranger and a temp, they were openly hostile to me literally from the minute I arrived. By lunchtime, it was clear that it was only going to get worse so I called my agency, told them what was happening and left.

dudsville · 29/11/2022 20:52

Twice, but i was young and the jobs were inconsequential. For one i couldn't just walk out as i had some really expensive products i needed to return, so I showed up really early leaving the products and a note explaining and then sat in a cafe across the street watching the package to make sure the manager got it! The other job i walked out of by going to the loo... and then just going home. For you, you'll need to weigh up whether your glost can carry you over until you get a new job.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 29/11/2022 21:02

Yes, and it was very out of character for me. It was in a franchise store and the new owners weren't allowed to fire us so instead they made our lives so miserable we all quit. Then they hired their friends and family instead, I was one of the last to go. The last straw was them accusing me of stealing when the previous days takings were in the wrong deposit envelope. Put there by their son.

It was no skin off my nose, I was working for 2 other branches of the same shop, one franchised and one run by head office and they both happily increased my hours!!

Justcallmebebes · 29/11/2022 21:03

Many years ago I walked out of Chelsea Girl. I started on the Monday and when they handed us our wages, in cash on Friday lunchtime, I never went back after my lunch break. This was in the 80's tho.

However tempted nowadays, I wouldn't walk out. You need references for a start

VikingLady · 29/11/2022 21:12

Several times.

1 got a slightly better job with immediate start

2 couldn't take the verbal abuse (sales)

3 they kept messing up my rota. It was an hours walk there and I found they'd scheduled me for a half hour shift. And they paid my pay into someone else's account and said I'd have to wait a fortnight to get it fixed.

4 soul destroying telesales. Several of these, actually. It goes on my CV as temping instead.

FortyFacedFuckers · 29/11/2022 21:17

Yes when I returned from my maternity leave part time within minutes of walking through the door my boss started putting pressure on me to work late, when would I be back full time etc, I ended up not getting home to see DS before he went to bed on the first day back, the second day was going the same and at lunchtime I lifted my handbag and photo of DS from my desk and never returned Blush

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 29/11/2022 21:23

I have never walked out on a job, I’m 51 and also on the verge of walking.

PinotPony · 29/11/2022 21:23

Yep. 3 months into a paralegal role at a local law firm. Awful demoralising place. I went home in tears most days.

Had a horrendous performance review. Feedback that I was "disappointing " but no explanation provided or objectives set.

That evening I called an employment solicitor friend who advised me that, if I didn't work my notice period, the firm would have to demonstrate they'd suffered a loss as a result.

Next morning I walked in with my written resignation and told the boss that it wasn't working out. When she raised my notice period, I just said "I'm sure you wouldn't want me working here knowing that I didn't want to be here". She agreed to pay me to the end of the month and gave me a reference.

Theancetocomein · 29/11/2022 21:24

Yes I have done once and as an adult in one of the best paying jobs I'd ever had. The boss was a total arse, he made everyone in the companies life a misery. I was his PA, he called me in one day and started yelling at me for not knowing how to do something the day before and slammed his hands on the table. I just stood up and walked out, calmly collected my stuff and left the building. I felt great relief but it really shook me up. No regrets though!

romdowa · 29/11/2022 21:25

I walked out of a bar Job years ago when i was young. I was working with an older woman who spent all her time outside having a smoke and drinking bottles of beer and left me to deal with the Saturday night crowd alone. One night the same rubbish was going on and a regular ordered a drink , when I turned around to give it to her she had gone. So I just left the drink on the bar because I didn't have time to look for her as we were very busy. 15 minutes later the owner appeared and informed me I was to serve that regular at the table. I turned around and told her I was alone and hadn't the time and she started insisting that I had to make time. So I told her well then you can do it yourself. Walked out the back , got my coat and left her to it. She was an absolute dragon and regularly took advantage of younger staff. She blew up my phone for days after, even rang my mother but there was no way I was going back there. I got a job in a restaurant a week later with no issues.

MrsMigginsCat · 29/11/2022 21:27

Yes in my very early 20s. Hideous bullying manager called me in to discipline me for something I hadn't been able to do because she'd hidden the thing I needed to do the job from me. The situation had been building up with other alleged misdemeanours before then as well. She hated me.

Both the HR director and the General Manager where there too so I sussed something was up. They started talking and I don't know where it came from, but I told them all to fuck off, went back to my desk, entered a few fake invoices onto the computer and walked out. I was the shy retiring type back then but I just snapped that day.

Adeleskirts · 29/11/2022 21:28

Yes I was in my early twenties, I worked in an office, the owner was an alkie, I’d worked there a year, the owner went to the major city centre wine bar across the road one night , and the owner of the bar expressed interest in me, so the boss said he could have me for a bottle of vodka. The bar owner came to collect his prize the next day, when I asked as to why he was stood at my desk acting all swoony, some of the men laughed and one explained. The bar owner was grinning at me.

I said no words, I picked my coat and bag up and walked out, with the bar owner still stood at my desk. The owner came out his office and shouted my name, I got in the lift, I said not a word, and I never ever went back

genuinely true story, I even remember the confused look on their faces as I walked.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 29/11/2022 21:29

Yes, once. Very small co, I was working in an office with the manager and sales guy. Manager was then told she could WFH but still had to sign my timesheets (how she was checking I was working from 30 miles away I have no idea). Sales guy swore all the time - every other word was fuck and it was like a verbal assault all the time. MD would email me, then if she didn't get a reply IM me and if I didn't answer that she'd call - I was getting no work done just answering her calls.

The final straw was the copier breaking and no-one being responsible for getting it fixed. I had two days off sick with a bad back and told myself as I went back 'if the copier isn't fixed it's a sign.' It wasn't fixed so I told the sales guy I was done and went home. MD screamed at me down the phone that night but couldn't have cared less.

Newwardrobe · 29/11/2022 21:30

I'm in my 50's and walked out of a job last year. The boss was an awful, rude , misogynistic, micromanaging twat , the last straw was when he told me I'd not put a paper clip in the correct place.

Lurkerlot · 29/11/2022 21:31

Yes, twice as an adult. Last time was in January just gone after I’d been in the new role for coming up to 6 months. If I’m honest, I knew within a couple of weeks I didn’t like the job, but thought I’d give it up to Christmas, have a break, and then see how I felt. I was about to pass probation and would have to serve a longer notice period, so I decided to get out sooner. And yes manager was an arse.

Hellocatshome · 29/11/2022 21:33

Yes, assembly line job which I'm pretty sure was breaking all sorts of health and safety rules. We were pushed beyond our limits already then a supervisor came along and turned the speed up on the conveyor belt. We were missing things as they zoomed along at lightning speed and my colleague and I looked at each other and as one downed tools and walked out. I could hear the chaos behind us but dare not look back we just kept walking.

Chickenwing2 · 29/11/2022 21:34

Yes! Day 1 of a retail job for a budget supermarket. Customer was yelling at me and i just thought nah!

SequinsandStilettos · 29/11/2022 21:53

Wimpy. Walked out halfway through a Friday night shift.
Not because of drunk, rude customers. Those I could handle.
But supervisor was acting like a prick.
So, he had to take over when I walked out. He looked really shocked I had the balls. I was, and still am, a people pleaser. But if you are constantly going to be a prick then at some point you will lose your employee's respect and goodwill.
I have also refused to return to certain schools, whilst doing supply teaching. Have always got to the end of the day but then rung agency to say hell to the no.
On many an occasion, they were not remotely surprised as they knew exactly what they were sending me into.

Georgeskitchen · 29/11/2022 21:59

Yes more than once.
Walked out of one job telling them to shove the job up their arse.
Worked at once place for a week. Hated it and took an afternoon off. Got sacked, collectEd my cash wage packet at lunch time and buggered off.
A couple of other cash in hand places, got my pay and just never went back.
Just on the verge of walking out of my current job actually!!

Emmelina · 29/11/2022 22:34

17, Christmas temp at Tesco’s. They started pulling all kinds of nonsense around my hours, wanted me to stay late or do the overnight shift, or come in early mornings before school (I was in sixth form) or set my shift time at an impossible start for getting there from school in time then reprimanded me for being late.
I walked out mid shift instead of going to the manager’s office for another bollocking as summoned by the very public tannoy! Instead I left via the staff room to get me coat, bag and keys!
Sod that for a game of soldiers.

cleanfreak12345 · 29/11/2022 23:06

I did once, I'd been there about ten minutes. Decided it wasn't for me and just walked off, didn't bother telling anybody lol

Afterfire · 29/11/2022 23:10

Yep left half way through a shift as a hotel receptionist. Worst place I’d ever worked. Manager made us work 7-3 with no break and weren’t even allowed a drink of water. Totally illegal but of course what can you do? If you complained she would have just found a reason to sack you anyway. So I got fed up and just walked out. I felt amazing until reality kicked in and I had a panic about having no money! Thankfully managed until I found something else.
