Holiday calculation for part-time work please

Evening all,

What's the holiday entitlement for a job working three days per week, 5 hours per day. (Normal full-time is 28 days (inc BHs).

You will get 5.6 weeks x 15 hours.

Or 5.6 weeks times three of your working days

Assuming full time is 5 days per week

to get a full week off you need to book 3 days off. So your entitlement is

28/5 * 3 = 16.8 days rounded up to 17 days.

You have to do it in hours and based on 5 x 3 it would be 84 hours INCLUDING Bank Holidays.
So, every bank holiday (assuming you work Mondays and Fridays) would come out of your holiday entitlement (8x3=24).
That leaves you with 60 hours of your own choosing assuming of course that the place where you work does not have a compulsory shut down over Christmas/New Year.

Depends if they work in days or hours. Your 'day' is only 5 hours long

At my place of work we would
calculate as follows:
For full time - 224 hours incl. bank hols
you work 37.5% of full time so you get 37.5% of the 224 hours. Which is 84.

Different places may have different techniques though.

Assumption FT 9-5 = 7.5 or 37.5 hours a week
Assumption working days Mon, Tue, Wed

28 x 7.5 = 210 hours gross leave for full time

210/37.5 x 15 = 84 hours gross leave for part time

Deduct BH falling on working days in 2023
NYD Mon = 5 hours
GF Fri = 0 hours
EM Mon = 5 hours
MD Mon = 5 hours
SBH Mon = 5 hours
ABH Mon = 5 hours
CD Mon = 5 hours
BD Mon = 5 hours
= 35 hours

84 hours - 35 hours = 49 hours net leave
Notes:

  1. Coronation BH falls on a Friday, depending on contract employer can require this to be taken out of entitlement. In this case 0 hours, or they can give an extra day 1 x 7.5 / 37.5 x 5 = 1 hour extra leave.
  2. Calculation must be redone each year because some BH fall on different days (NYD, CD, BD).
  3. If different days worked re do BH deduction.

OP said it was 9-5 with a paid lunch - so I was making an assumption of a 40 hour full time week.

@Mouthfulofquiz sorry i didn’t see the response as I was typing out the calculation the OP requested. Once you have the calculation easy to change from 7.5 to 8 hour days.

She is entitled to 5.6 * 3 = 16.8 days per year, which most employers would round up to 17 days. A week off would be 3 days of the holiday entitlement.

As you work a 5-hour day, 16.8 days comes to 84 hours, so those who have calculated that way have come to the right answer. But it is only necessary to calculate this way when the employee works irregular hours.

OP didn't specify which 3 days she works so you cant deduct any bank holidays until you know which of her working days fall on a bank holiday

I'm not sure that is true. I work 4 full days a week. Have the same day off every single week and my holiday is calculated in hours.

We allow employees to take leave in hour chunks so it is helpful
to calculate in hours for that type of situation.

The fact that your employer chooses to calculate your holiday that way doesn't mean it is necessary to do it that way.

If full-time employees get 28 days holiday per year including bank holidays (the statutory minimum), you are entitled to 22.4 days including any bank holidays that fall on your normal working day.
