Dbs checks and Local Government

Hi, I've been offered a job within a local government dept, and been told they need to do a Dbs check.

In my early 20's I was convicted of theft (£100). I was found guilty, had a noncustodial sentence. Tbh it was sooo long ago I can't remember what happened. I know I didn't go to prison or receive a suspended sentence or anything.

I am now 52, and as the offence was longer than 11 years ago and is under the "can be filtered" category, will it show up on any DBS checks?
Incidentally, I found out many many years later that the manager's daughter stole the money and blamed me!

It depends on if its an enhanced dbs or not and also if you got a caution or a suspended sentence (these are treated as a prison sentence) or something else.

I have a caution that is filtered even on an enhanced DBS

I would be surprised if it did show up on your DBS check. But even if it does, that wouldn’t necessarily mean you won’t get the job. It was 30 years ago and employers can be quite forgiving for youthful misdemeanours.

You will be fine. It will show up but because it was so long ago you will be invited in to explain then all will be well

I know someone who is now a very senior teacher who had a theft conviction as a young person. She must have a DBS, she is also open about her past when talking to young people who have made mistakes and shows how it's possible to turn things around. ( not saying you have to mention it to anyone though)

I employ staff who require enhanced DBS for the LA working with children, some have things that come up on the DBS. It doesn't mean I won't employ them, it depends on what the conviction is for, how old they were, how long ago and what their attitude towards it is when they're asked about it. Certainly won't prevent you being given the job
