Manager's manager

In what situations would you take a work issue/ complaint up to your manager's manager?

(Think someone quite high up in the organisation, overseeing multiple services nationally etc.)

I am unhappy with an issue to do with my salary and having spoken to my area manager I don't think she is all that interested or going to take action.

AIBU to take it to the next level up? Or would you go to HR or something instead?

If there is no published pay policy, then speak to HR and ask to see the pay policy and procedure. This should set out the parameters managers work within and the salary review procedure.

Follow the procedure, if you have already done this then arrange a 1:2:1 with your managers manager. Don’t just go with the salary request but use it as a discussion about your career and development at the same time.

I would;

  • put a follow up in writing to your manager and ask for a response within x days
  • forward to your HR or employee relations team if no response asking for their advice

Depends what the issue is really. Do you think there is actually an error, something contractual that you have been unable to resolve through all the normal channels or do you want a pay increase?
