Would love some help with compressed hours application

Hello! I’m making a request at my workplace for compressed hours. I normally work 35 hours across five days. I want to compress this into four days. What I’d love some help with are the following questions on the application form - answering them in a way that supports my claim and makes it sounds beneficial to the team if possible. Scratching my head a bit right now!

What effect will your request have in colleagues and your department?

  • I guess I can say that I won’t be working on day a week, but I can make sure that someone else’s from my small team is definitely in so there’s always cover and someone to answer questions
  • I could say that it’s beneficial to the service area because I’ll be starting earlier and finishing later on my working days, meaning I’m around to pick up issues first thing in the morning or deal with anything that arises later on (we sometimes run evening events)

How do you need your department and colleagues to support your request?

  • I could say that I need everyone to be aware of my working pattern so they know when they can contact me?
  • not sure what else I can say here that doesn’t sound negative…

Thanks mumsnet!

First question - you will be more focused and motivated on the days you’re in because you’re benefiting from a better work/life balance

Second question - avoid booking whole team meetings / calls on the day you’re not in

What's the reason for compressing your hours? My work just offered me that as I'm juggling full time work and a 2 year old. I do 8-5pm with a 30 min lunch Monday-Thursday and work 8-11.30 on a Friday to accommodate childcare. Not really much was said in the way of consulting my colleagues they knew it was for my child and it's not affected anything. Maybe if they knew why etc? Could be helpful?

I do compressed hours.

Why you want to do it shouldn’t be relevant - they should be just as likely to grant it to someone who wants a day off to mooch at home.

Two things are important to me in making it work -

  • I structure my days so I have long, uninterrupted periods at the start and end of the day when most others aren’t working, so I can concentrate on complicated things. The middle of my days are free for stuff that needs clients or colleagues.
  • I’m available on my day off for urgent things/ making sure stuff ticks over/ sending on important things to colleagues working. And I’ll happily change my days around if needed.
