Working from home - Workstation Risk Assessment

I'll preface this by saying I'm 5'2".

I'm due to have a workstation risk assessment (done remotely so I'm not sure how that is going to actually work out). Earlier this year I submitted a request through management saying that I need a footrest as the adjustable chair I have either lets my feet be on the floor (just about) or the monitor on the desk is not at the right level (as the seat is low enough for me to have my feet properly on the floor). That's the background.

If my employer says I can get a footrest, which of these 4 would you pick if you had the choice?

Option 1

Option 2

Option 3

Option 4

I'm not sure if I'll be allowed to get one but if I can say to them that I've had a look and this is what I'd like, it might help.

Our health and safety would never accept a soft one like that. They can cause poor posture and damage. This is the only type we'd permit www.amazon.co.uk/HUANUO-Function-Adjustable-Different-Positions/dp/B09XHYN2PG/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?keywords=Desk+Footrest&qid=1668712135&sr=8-3-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1&smid=A1IZC5J3SYSVAI

Except for certain specific conditions where a footstool is more appropriate.

Can't you just use one without telling them (if they say no)?

She probably wants them to pay for it

PinkFrogss · 17/11/2022 19:29

Do you know for a fact OP that they’ll let you choose one? Our work just provides them if needed, we don’t get to pick, and they definitely wouldn’t shell out £30 for one!

Wait and see what the assessment comes back with, as pp says they may not accept a soft one anyway

LookItsMeAgain · 17/11/2022 21:28

I don't know if they'll allow a soft one or not. I also don't know if they will provide one or allow me to select one.
I would expect my employer to either contribute to the cost (and I would also contribute) or for my employer to cover 100% of the cost. I don't think there's anything wrong in thinking that.

I will know more tomorrow.

This is the type my workplace would provide, too.

ohidoliketobe · 17/11/2022 21:36

Another here who's occupational health department would issue you with the standard plastic as linked above. Not entirely sure about those foot cushions tbh.

CourtneeLuv · 17/11/2022 21:52

Im 5"1 and I've had several at different companies and this was my favourite one, it seemed to be the right height.

I might order one because I've got a wooden box at the moment 😂

Same.

Fleabigg · 15/02/2023 14:31

My workplace would not let someone choose. They would be provided with whichever one the company occ health uses recommends for their particular issue.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 15/02/2023 14:33

None of them. Your feet should be flat on the ground or footrest.

HyacinthineMacaw · 15/02/2023 14:34

Our H&S wouldn’t allow a soft one you can’t adjust. I have the most basic one out of the Banner stationery catalogue, but it adjusts to four different heights, so I can get it spot on for my 5’3” self. It cost £14 about ten years ago, and is still going strong.

…and having checked out the link posted earlier, it’s exactly like that one!

MuthaHubbard · 15/02/2023 14:37

Mine is literally the same as @Quveas link - years old mind but does the job and I'm same height as you

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 15/02/2023 15:07

This is my job! So they should be undertaking a dse assessment. This will see how you sit at your desk, any adjustments they can make to your chair etc.... and your screen position. The result could end with a footrest, a screen raiser, a different desk. If the dse assessor thinks it may require different equipment they get sent to us for an indepth specialist assessment and then more equipment can be ordered. You normally won't get a choice of equipment. It is what is suitable for the job at the companies preferred supplier. They should be providing it if you are a dse user.
