Dh asked to remove his kippah clip

DH works in a factory and was asked to remove his kippah clip because it's metal and it could contaminate the food product. While I understand the concern, he can't wear double sided tape to keep his kippah on as it hurts his head so I'm not sure what the alternative is?

Isn’t his hair covered anyway? Like a cover that goes over his hair and kippah?

BIWI · 09/11/2022 09:57

Is he orthodox, or praying while at work?

Charlieiscool · 09/11/2022 09:58

If it’s essential for your religion that he wears it at all times could he use a plastic clip while at work?

girlmom21 · 09/11/2022 10:00

Has he ever had this issue at work before or is it a new workplace?

Froppysue · 09/11/2022 10:03

Can he wear a plastic/silicone/acrylic clip instead?
I’d have thought working with food products he would have a hair net covering his head and kippah anyway, but if their rules state no metal there are definitely alternatives to that.

maddy68 · 09/11/2022 10:04

Food safety laws are stringent so I can understand why they are asking him to remove it. I'm not sure even a plastic one would be better as it's the fact you are leaning over food and one could fall in

Tape is a reasonable alternative. But if he is wearing the head covering for the food anyway could he just place it and keep it in place with the covering or not wear it at all?

TowerStork · 09/11/2022 10:04

If he works around food do they use a hair covering? It's a while since I worked with food but hair clips were worn to keep our hair out of the way and less likely to stray. There must be an approved product he could use

WeepingSomnambulist · 09/11/2022 10:04

He can use a plastic clip.

There are alternatives. They're not saying he cant wear his kippah. They're saying no metal; same rule as for everyone else. He needs to use an alternative clip.

jewishmum · 09/11/2022 10:09

Yes he wears a hair net over it all.

Struggling to find a silicone or fully plastic clip on eBay, most hinges are metal or it's a metal base,

Does anyone have a helpful link?

Alternatively I use a hot glue gun underneath the kippah and hide the clip inside?

To be honest plastic clip would not make any difference at all. In fact, it would be worse than metal as many factories have metal detectors which may be able to detect metal contamination but not plastic one. Plastic or metal, no one wants to find it in their food.

Having said that, if I was a QA manager I would definitely let your husband wear his kippah clip because people are already permitted to wear wedding bands on the factory floor/medical jewelry etc. I would trust your husband to be responsible for his clip and having a hair net on top would further reduce the risk of product contamination.

QA team can even put further measures in place such as audits, checks etc.

I fully sympathise with your husband as someone who used to work in food industry wearing a hair covering which requires pins/clips.

Good luck!

KnickerlessParsons · 09/11/2022 10:18

I'm probably being naïve, but wouldn't the hairnet serve the same purpose as the kippah religiously speaking? Ie the need to keep the head covered? So does he need to wear the kippah at all while he's wearing his hairnet?

TokyoSushi · 09/11/2022 10:22

Genuine question, why is it no metal? What difference does it make what the clip is made out of?

Could you do something to make the clip go underneath OP? otherwise agree a plastic clip or similar might be the answer.

MonkeypuzzleClimber · 09/11/2022 10:24

You can get one with a hidden clip pocket inside, or sew in Kippah clips Link

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/11/2022 10:25

What about something like this op? It would be hidden as you sew it in. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123496308122?var=424035541579&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338365712&toolid=20006&customid=EB77754887&

Northernsoullover · 09/11/2022 10:27

Another poster beat me too it but metal is better than plastic due to metal detection. Hope you find a solution..

MonkeypuzzleClimber · 09/11/2022 10:29

You can get stick in ones tooLink

Aposterhasnoname · 09/11/2022 10:32

As a food safety manager I’m amazed they have done this. Metal is vastly preferably to plastic as it can be detected, plus it’s under his hairnet so not going to fall out. I know nothing about kippah, so forgive me if this is massively wrong, but would a fabric head band going over the top of the kippah work? Or, doesn’t the hairnet keep the kippah in pace anyway?

whatsup00 · 09/11/2022 10:40

If it's inside a hairnet it can't fall out so I don't get it. I hope you get it resolved. The hidden ones look good.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/11/2022 10:47

I had to read that twice ...

closingloop · 09/11/2022 10:56

Apologies for my lack of knowledge on these things, but unsure as whether the head has to be covered, or a kippah worn - if it's a head covering, would one of the thicker hairnet/coverings work? The ones that are almost like a paper showercap?

Georgyporky · 09/11/2022 11:03

Would blutack work?

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 09/11/2022 11:04

These ones look plastic though the listing doesn't state it explicitly - you could message the seller to check?
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122873473192 they have holes to sew them inside the kippah and then they slide into the hair like a comb.

Me too 🤣 I don't know if you're referring to the same thing that I am, but I just got an image of the dad from Matilda with the hat glued to his head 🤣

Eyesofdisarray · 09/11/2022 11:07

A suede Kippah

These look good @jewishmum if his boss agrees? Don’t do anything without checking first.
