Hi

I applied for a new job which is a promotion but in a different trust to where I work.

I'm a band 5 nurse 2.5 years qualified, this is a development role into an education/specialist role at band 6. It is a job I've always fancied but never saw as a development post so hadn't applied for lack of experience. I applied for this thinking if I didn't id regret it. However, I was very surprised to get an interview and have been offered the role.

I'm very torn on whether to accept it. I do love my current job (when politics allows me to do it), I work with an amazing team and have a really good manager and supportive seniors. My current job has supported me with courses and Training related to my interests. I also only have a 5 minute commute. However, there are lots of politics and movement of staff, short staffing, problems with more senior management and the chance of a band 6 CN role is unlikely for at least another 5 years, at a push. It is also shift work which does drain me

The new job whilst being my ideal job and a new challenge with better hours would be a 35-45 minute commute either way, traffic worsened by not being shifts. However, the commute is the only drawback to the role.

I'm not sure whether to take it, all advice appreciated. Thanks

Based on everything you’ve said, I’d definitely take the new role. A 35-45 minute commute is pretty standard for a lot of people.

Sounds good for your career , will you end up on less money though ? No unsocial hours and commuting costs ?
If that's not a problem, go for it.

Is there any chance of moving even 10 mins nearer to the band 6 job in the future? I'd take it. They clearly see potential in you!

Thanks for your reply.

Because I am currently first increment band 5 plus unsocials, this job would pay first increment band 6 which would result in the same overall pay or up to £50 a month more . The petrol cost would be more so I would perhaps be worse off slightly for the first year or two. However, the certifications this role will result in me gaining etc (and that I won't have to pay for) would place me in a better position for band 7 + roles in the future. So I suppose it's a short term slight loss but potential longer term benefits.

Yes, Im looking to buy and if I moved to the other side of the city I would be 15-20 mins closer

I've accepted the new job. Thanks everyone.

The slow speed of NHS background checks means I've probably at least 3 months ago my current job anyway.

I would take the new job. Upon reading your OP, I thought it was a no-brainer.

But then reading that you may be slightly worse off does make me think twice. However overall I still think the benefits outweigh the cons. Your commute to work isn’t out of the ordinary and you’ll still get time at home/with your family. There may be ways you can cut down on costs, public transport perhaps? There’s train schemes where you can park at the station for free.

Congratulations! for your new job! I listen to podcasts on my commute and time passes quickly.

Thanks everyone

Part of me never thought I'd leave my current post, so it feels a bit surreal
