Another work day with nothing to do

I bloody hate my job. Had 20 mins of work yesterday and 10 mins today. I'm paid for 7.5 hours a day. This is not unusual. There are busy periods but I have had very little to do for months now. I'm sick of emailing managers and colleagues to ask if there is anything they need me to do as I have capacity.

We never went back to the office, so it does mean I can get stuff done at home, but having so little to do is, well, soul and confidence destroying.

I'm looking for other jobs, in fact that is how I spent yesterday and today, but I'm painfully aware I have nothing to sell from my current job to a prospective employer.

Just ranting really.

Boredom is soul destroying ..good luck in finding a new job, but what does your line manager say?

wastedofworld · 08/11/2022 14:50

Nothing really! He always hated managing, and home working appears to have let him forget I exist at all, which suits him. He never really speaks to me. I have very little contact with anyone at work. Can regularly go a week with no contact from any of them!

what is your job supposed to be? if you explain what sort of work/indutry/job role you are in we might be able to suggest toome tasks/projects you could set up for yourself?

Could you do some free online training to prepare you for another job?

reallyworriedjobhunter · 08/11/2022 15:02

I had a job like that once. It was not fun at all.

Xgle · 08/11/2022 15:14

Sounds like my job, I have 2-3 hours of work to do everyday, we work from home as well. It’s low stress, pay is not bad, but I do get bored and feel like I am not learning as much.

MabelMoo23 · 08/11/2022 15:17

My job is like that. I’m bored to death, my line manager seems to have forgotten I exist but I have a great work life balance but sucking it up due to that.

feel so much like I’m totally not valued and if I left, no one would notice I was gone. As in they’d notice their work not being done - but as for me as a person? Nope.

I bloody left my career to take this job - to support my husband and be there for our children. I have no identity and feel so alone and isolated.

In previous roles with shit managers I was quite good at identifying my own useful projects to do. Mind you, was in the office then so was easier to know what was going on and where there was something useful for me to do.

But this job is not like that. There isn't really scope for innovation or creating projects. I don't want to say what it is in case I get outed!

I'm sorry, it's rubbish.

There's a lot of free online learning available, LinkedIn, OU etc. I would pick something and set some goals.

Good luck with your job hunt!

Annie232 · 08/11/2022 16:15

Get another job, don’t quit your first and get 2x salary.

Get another job, don’t quit your first and get 2x salary.

I’d say that is tempting to be honest! Lots of people in IT do it.

any chance you can go back into the office?

SnowfallSnowball · 08/11/2022 16:34

Just came to say I feel your pain, mine is the same. I do go into the office but no one speaks to me despite trying. Manager doesn’t communicate, I’m so fucking bored. It’s soul destroying!

I really want to resign but I won’t until I find another job, hoping I get something new very soon so I can have a new start in January!

KnickerlessParsons · 08/11/2022 16:37

What does you LM say when it comes to performance appraisal time?

SevernEleven · 08/11/2022 16:38

I'd love this, what do you all do and where do I find one of these jobs?

My job is 20hrs per week and very busy, turns out it was previously a full time role.

OP, if it was me, I'd book myself some meetings eg 9-10 free online training course on something that interests me. 10-11 online training in something that will enhance my cv. 11-12 declutter an area of my house. 12-1 lunch, 1-2 go for a walk/do some gardening. 2-3 online yoga class. 3-4 beauty maintenance. 4-5 planning and research for holidays, new job etc

princesssparklepants · 08/11/2022 16:45

Omg I thought I was the only one in this predicament!

My friends and family think it's great I'm getting paid to do f all but im so bored.
Sadly I have to suck it up as the money is too good and I can fit it round school hours

But god I feel like im wasting my life.

Mercurial123 · 08/11/2022 16:51

I have a job like this, I'm learning a language to make the day go quicker.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 08/11/2022 16:54

Set up your own business on the side .

MushMonster · 08/11/2022 16:57

I feel for you OP!
It is soul destroying as you say.
You do well to look for another job. Best luck with that!
Do not stay any minute longer than you need in this job, it brings your mood, confidence and abilities down after a while.

antiquisearchers · 08/11/2022 16:59

I've had jobs like this and I sympathise. I do think, though, that being home based could work in your favour as you can do pretty much anything you want with your time!

DomesticShortHair · 08/11/2022 17:00

I’m often like this. Absolutely love it. I bought a mouse jiggler thingemybob to keep my Teams in the green, and then go and have a snooze, watch a film or read a book all day. Not every working day is like it, but I wish it was.

ShandaLear · 08/11/2022 17:09

Enrol on a masters degree or a PhD - you could even ask work to pay for it! Do a project management qualification- they’re always in demand. Join a gym and get super fit. Start a business project based on your company - do business modelling, think up new ideas, do a marketing strategy/business plan/service improvement. Even if you don’t use them you can say you’ve written them. Look at your corporate strategy and look at what you could do to contribute to it. That way, if they do come looking for ideas you have them.

astronewt · 08/11/2022 17:18

I'd do a coding bootcamp/online course or degree/write fiction/spend a lot of time working out and walking the dog.

PupInAPram · 08/11/2022 17:38

I'm so jealous. We are struggling to fill vacancies atm so I have been doing 2 people's jobs since September. Starting at 6.30am finishing at 5pm. No breaks. I'm in my early 60s and I'm so very tired. If could get a job wfh with 10 minutes of work a day I'd be in heaven!

Tadpoll · 08/11/2022 17:57

This has been today OP. What’s really annoying is that in theory at any time someone at work could message me and ask me to jump on something, so I have to stay by my laptop.

For those saying it must be heaven - it is not. It’s soul destroying.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/11/2022 18:56

You can buy a mouse jiggler thingemybob to keep your Teams in the green???? 😮
Life changer! Where do I get one? Or what do I google? Assume it's not "mouse jiggler thingemybob"!

YukoandHiro · 08/11/2022 18:58

I had a job like this once and it was in the office. It was so hard trying to look busy but at least I had the social interaction. We all took a lot of long lunches.
I remember I spent most of my work day reading the Guardian website. It was soul destroying, I sympathise. I lasted about 15 months.
