Bookkeeping/Accounting and realistic opportunities

I've been out of work for years thanks to long term health problems post-cancer, but I've been considering studying Bookkeeping or Accounting with the thought that it might be something I can get a work from home job in eventually.

My concerns are that every job will ask for experience. I've seen volunteer positions asking for at least 5 years experience even. Has anybody done anything similar? Are my hopes of finding a job this way unrealistic in the current job climate? Any insight is appreciated!

when you say ‘work from home job’ are you thinking of freelance bookkeeping? ie/ working for yourself?
IMO, you would need experience actually working for a company for quite some time before that would be possible. Preferably more than one company too. There is no way you could study, get qualifications and then work from home for yourself.

If you are talking about being employed, but home-based then … maybe? But you would still need experience of working in office environment before getting a job at a level that would enable home working.
Honestly, I do think you’re being unrealistic here - sorry to burst your bubble. Good luck though with getting back into work

Hmm. Have you looked at what they pay? In Surrey on Reed they are advertising for experienced basic accounts jobs at £11.50 an hour. Why would you do that? Our local Aldi offer same rates/better for till work.

@Oblomov22 I think the whole point is OP wants/needs to work from home due to heath issues?

Xiomara22 · 09/11/2022 11:31

So after losing my job I decided to retrain as a bookkeeper using Online learning with a view to do self employed bookkeeping from home.
Then with the cost of living Crisis needed to get a job desperately, I applied for 30+ jobs even if they asked for experience (I had none just my qualifications recently sat)
After 2 months I found a position and feel I was very lucky to get it.
It’s a joke that most places want 3 years minimum. Good luck in your job hunt x

I appreciate that Stranger. I was just trying to explain that unfortunately at the basic level it's not very well-paid and I've seen positions advertised locally at £9 an hour.

And as pp said it's a vicious circle - is impossible to get experience, but then they turn round and say they want people with experience- how can you win?

Why would you do that for £9 an hour? if you'd worked for years, studied bookkeeping, got experience and still working for £9 an hour when you can get other jobs for much more hourly rate. I appreciate this doesn't apply to op because she has medical issues and she is looking for a home job.

but just generally, what I'm saying is locally they'll pay someone to do bits around your garden. I'm not even talking a proper qualified gardener but just odd bits they'll pay someone £15-£20 an hour. or they'll pay similar than that for someone to do your ironing. so what I'm saying is there is a lack of respect for basic bookkeeping. It's not very well paid.

a very good bookkeeper is a skilled thing and they're hard to find. Especially at the moment. Many of my friends with years and years worth of bookkeeping, skilled, who know how to solve complicated messes once clients get themselves into a real pickle can be charging £25 to £50 or £75 per hour. Both SE or PAYE at that rate.

Most work from home. Many have SE book keeping jobs, lots of clients. And many have a PAYE job aswell, so best of both worlds - own clients, work when you like. Plus job, enjoying going into an office for 2 days a week.

But this is not where OP is. I agree with a pp, that unfortunately OP may be in for a nasty shock, re the reality.

Can I ask what course you did? Was it AAT? And do you mind sharing what kind of role it is you got? I'm a lapsed project manager looking at a career change and wondering whether it's worth getting some AAT qualifications in order to move into finance/accounts roles

Xiomara22 · 15/11/2022 21:00

@Wotwotwotwotwot

I sat my AAT level 2 & 3 in bookkeeping through a website called E-careers then found my nearest exam centre to take my exams. All very flexible. Had two years to compete them both but I completed them in 1 year. I’m now an accounts assistant. Finding it very interesting and was definitely worth a change of career 😊

I would never use a book keeper with no experience

girlmeetsboy · 27/07/2023 19:20

I have a very basic qualification in City and guilds but through a series of jobs that I've been dropped in the deep which was the best thing for me, so I qualified by experience. I now am an fd on 60k, anything is possible x
