Fear I have made a big mistake

I applied for a job and have been lucky enough to get an interview.

Someone I work with used to work for the company so I asked what it was like thinking that I could trust her. She has then proceeded to tell people that I am leaving.

I was so worried that my manger would hear about my interview second hand and felt she deserved to hear from me rather than office gossip so I felt I had no choice but to tell her that I have an interview elsewhere.

Ideally, I wouldn't have told her unless I was offered the position and handing in my notice.

My manager obviously asked me why I was looking elsewhere and I was honest and said that the only reason is they are offering more money for the same role. She was lovely and said that I had to do what was right for me.

I haven't got the job yet now I am worried what my manager thinks of me.

Will she think I am awful or will she appreciate my honesty.

I feel pressured now to get this new role.

I have obviously learnt a massive lesson here....don't tell anyone anything!

Some managers take it as a massive offence when you want to leave, some don't. Generally I think you know by their reaction and subsequent actions.

When you leave you leave them with a problem - they have a gap to fill and work that needs to be covered. This is entirely their problem, but generally this is what makes some managers annoyed when you leave.

Personally I always support my staff in their career plans regardless of what I might feel about them leaving. It's not my life and not my business!

You haven't done anything wrong at all. Good luck for the interview, hope it goes well! Don't pressure yourself - what will be will be. Prepare well and do your best!

I can't tell you what your manager thinks. If it were me I would support you to get the role that you want, even if it wasn't convenient for me. I can't offer you more than you are paid. If someone else can that's great and good luck. I wouldn't hold anyone back.

Will soon brush over.

I had an employer once found out from their 'friend' I had tentatively applied elsewhere. I had no idea 2 different sectors could be linked but they were through neighbours and friends.

It cost a few awkward nights and days summer 2020 but eventually all was forgiven. I served more months then if I had resigned on the spot out of embarrassment. Somehow I even went on to outlive the person employed to 'replace' me. 6 months on there would have been a payrise.
