Local Government - Pay Rises

Hi

I've worked in local government for a number of years. I always thought that you basically remained in the pay band your job was originally advertised at if your job didn't change at all.

I was speaking with someone this week who has had their job reevaluated a number of times in local government (same job) on basis he has gained more technical experience (so has gained more points on this front) and people higher up the chain are relying on him more the more experienced he becomes (but essentially his post hasn't changed)

He has requested re-evaluations and been put in different bands and therefore obtained pay rises

Anyone experienced this please?

I also noticed that a council local to me is now advertising a post which has increased by two pay-bands from last year - same job. I have people on my team doing that exact same job (same JD was used) and wonder if there is now scope to get them pay-rises based on this

Sounds like Job Evaluation. In my industry if a job is evaluated and comes out as a higher grade then the job has to be advertised.

Have a look on your intranet as there maybe a published policy/process.

Ask HR, have a chat first then follow up with an email.

It will be a re evaluation, sometimes these come from a manger sometimes they are requested by individuals.
I work for local government and I have seen this happen too. Just be warned that others in similar roles on similar grades would probably need to go through similar and this have a negative outcome. Mostly this type of change comes from a restructure after months of evaluation and consultation.

Yes, this has happened in my team, successfully.

Thanks @lucyomega and @DorritLittle - I had no idea about this and also another colleague in my council (different department to me and different role) had no idea. Seems something that, in some councils, isn't spoken about at all probably for obvious reasons
