Handing notice in during probation

Hi I'm wondering if someone can advise me please.

I started a new role almost six months ago, but it isn't for me. I was miss sold the role, it isn't the challenge I was hoping for, there is actually very little work to do despite me asking for more, it was supposed to be flexible working and it isn't and I was supposed to be able to work from home but that isn't the case - there is a big push to have a presence in the office when the work can all be done remotely.

I have had nothing but positive feedback from my new employer.

I've been offered a new role which is better suited to me more money and flexible working hours (so I can do school run) and I know it's genuine this time as I have friends already working there.

How do I break it to my new boss that I'm leaving? My new role is dependant on her giving me a decent reference. I'm terrified she will be so disappointed she won't give me one.

Literally just say it's not working out for me but thank you I've learnt a lot. Then follow up by email.

This. If they ask why, then expand as per your OP.

Tell them you have had to make the decision to leave due to the working arrangements not being as expected and you have found something else that does suit you?

Talk to her and explain, that's the best you can do. Explain why it's not what you expected and you've found something that fits and you hope she'll give you a reference reflecting the work you've performed over the last 6 months. Personally I'd be honest

Well firstly they have to provide a factual reference and most companies only give basic information these days anyway, so don’t fret about that.

I would focus on the flexibility and how it’s better for you in the new job in your resignation. I would point out the mismatch between what they said about their job, in an exit interview if they have one.

Thanks everyone
