Hi there,

I am just looking for a bit of advice, as its a strange one which may be straight forward , but I cannot see the wood through the trees.

I have recently been accepted for a new role at a growing company , which was a little below my skill level , but had a lot of benefits which is why I applied. I have quite a varied skill range but also quite niche, but lot of experience in a particular area so negotiated a little more than they wanted to pay me (they went straight to the bottom of the grading) and am due to start during November.

They did mention that the company was growing, and more roles would come up during my time creating more opportunities internally, which I was excited about, however they have done a lot of marketing across social media and email which I was sent (I did not go looking , as I have seen other jobs in the past and think ' What If...' ) and and another role has come up in the same company which I cannot stop thinking about. Its a different department (but small company so quite close), fits a number of skill sets and has a £10-15k difference in salary. I would like to call and chat about it, but aware how it could be seen . My new manager is not the person who would lead this new roles department. There are multiple roles of my role going at this company, so I am not the only new starter, and they are still recruiting.

The reason I applied was I loved the company, the ethos and the chance to be part of something different, plus the hybrid / remote role. If it was at another company, I would probably have applied and see what happens - but this is at the same company. I really don't want to upset them, but alternatively I have never heard of anyone else in this situation, and wondered if anyone had come across it? I am leaning to leaving it, and just getting on with this new role - but I am pretty anxious about things usually, so this may just be me taking the easy option.

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you :)

I'd apply for the role that you really want, and just see what happens. It's not ideal, but it's just how things work out sometimes.

Keep it positive, contact the hr person you’ve been in touch with and reiterate your excitement to join the company and why you love them yada dada and mention this upcoming role and thought you thought given your skills sets and experience it may be a role the company may benefit from your applying for… happens regularly so please don’t be worried, at the end of the day companies want the best ppl in the right roles so it’s in their interest as much as yours!

Thank you both so much - in honesty I thought I would be told to give it six months, and see what else comes up! I will give the HR person a ring on Monday and see what they say. Your help is really appreciated - I don't know many people who have moved jobs for many years, so thank you so much :)

I really disagree with the previous posts, I think it could go quite badly. I would be quite annoyed if somebody accepted a job offer from me but then applied for another job in the same organisation. You could end up losing out on both, I think your idea of getting in and looking for internal opportunities down the line is better.
