Training and development - what do you wish your company did?

I work in training and development and I am looking for some inspiration. I quite like training courses and group sessions but I know that is a not widely held view and often training is seen as a bit of a pain.

So from your perspective what do you like about your company and what they offer in terms of training and development?

What do you not like?

What do you wish they would do or what do you think could make you more engaged with your development?

I wish that they would accept that I don't want 'development' for development's sake.

I am happy in my current role and am very good at it. I want to come in, settle my cases and go. I don't want promotion or projects to enrich my role. They are an unnecessary distraction.

Development in terms of learning new aspects to my job would be OK, but they are rare. Twice a year I have to sit with my manager for a development plan. My current manager finally gets it but is leaving so I will have to train another.

I would like all current and new 'management' employees to undergo mandatory 'people management', because although they may be shit hot at the work aspects of the role, most are totally crap at actually 'managing' other people !

You either get the 'couldn't give a shit, that's a you problem' type, or the 'you must complete every task exactly as I would do it' micromanager type.

It's a very rare thing to get a manager who can both lead and motivate their staff these days, but 30 yrs ago being taught how to 'manage' (i.e lead and motivate) people was actually taught to new recruits ?

Had more time for people/be a communicator - the very skill often asked of people going for jobs.

A 5-day induction became 2.5 days. Like my nearest and dearest have giggled and find it funny that my current management are the type to 'leave you alone until you need a firm chat' but I thoroughly hate it. Don't ask unless you need to culture. oh my.

No one trains people like they did 20 odd years - when I first started out and was interested in Head Receptionist so much went into people, you would have training plans and coaching sign off's as competent at a task or duty nowadays none of that.

Rant over.

disabililty awareness - making adjustments, not being discriminatory, inclusive language, understanding access to work.

Not doing tick box basic e-learning videos on diversity and inclusion (that usually dont even cover disability or have the information wrong).

Getting the training delivered by a proper disability organisation like scope or leonard cheshire or some other disability charity.

That would go a long way to improving workplace relations.
