Help! What can I do for £1 a week!

Hi everyone sorry if that's a click-baity title but that's literally all I need...

My DC turns 3 soon and will (hopefully) be eligible for the 30 hours free childcare funding at the start of the next term which will be January. As many of you DMs will know, to be eligible for this funding, both of the child's parents need to be working and earning the equivalent of 16hrs per week at minimum wage.

My issue is that I work two days per week currently at above minimum wage, but term time only (38 weeks per year). Over the year, this equates to £4 per month under the threshold for being eligible for the funding.

I have asked my current job about the possibility to increase my hours and they have said there's no budget nor business need at the moment.

I know there's the universal 15 hours childcare so it's not the end of the world if I can't scrape the earnings together for 30 hours eligibility but it just feels such a shame to miss out when my earnings are so close to what's needed.

So, my question is, does anyone have any ideas of part time (maybe one other day per week) work that I could apply for to fit around when DC goes to nursery?

Bar work out of the question as no evening child care so would have to be during the day preferable school hours.

Or, any way I can have even £1 extra per week income that counts towards the eligibility criteria?

Thank you in advance

Dinner lady or lunch time supervisor at a primary school? Often advertised at our local one!

RandomMess · 15/10/2022 20:15

Wonder if you can advertise to do ironing?

HighlandPony · 15/10/2022 20:17

Domestic cleaning or home help.

berksandbeyond · 15/10/2022 20:17

Paper round?

In seriousness yes I would look for a lunch time supervisor type role

FruitPastilleNut · 15/10/2022 20:18

Do Avon. Just don't do very much of it, just enough to push you over the threshold.

legalseagull · 15/10/2022 20:18

Ask for a £4 a month pay rise and explain?

DoodlePug · 15/10/2022 20:18

Car wash for family?

DoodlePug · 15/10/2022 20:20

Or in all honesty do anything then charge yourself for it.

Does anybody have any insight into how the earnings are audited?

If I were to do ironing or cleaning etc how do I make it 'official' so that the earnings are visible and able to be classed as income rather than just a bank transfer which could be anything? Hope that makes sense

Thank you for suggestions so far

Apply to a retail shop. We used to have staff that only worked one 4 hour shift a week.
The other benefit is the staff discount. If you were available to cover some lunchtime it might be ideal for a local shop

You set up self employed. Invoice customers, keep records of revived money.

File self employed income finances on line once per year.

Helpful - thank you. I will look into setting up a small side business. I have barbering qualifications so it could be time for a refresher course and to dust off my scissors.

Oh barbering is perfect!! You only need to do a cut per week!

Do a few freebies and get advertising on social media Sort out insurance both business and home accordingly.

I realise it may be different for the UC which I presume you're claiming, but if you're on Working Tax Credit they define you as working (eg) 16 hours a week even if you only work those hours termtime.

I'm not claiming UC as my partner is in an ok- paid job so we just about manage with me working part time, term time. This is why I would like the 30 hours funded ideally though as it would mean I could work more/elsewhere and bring in more money without childcare costs. 15 hours childcare funding would cover nursery on my two work days only.

I think my best bet is going to be some form of self employment to bridge the gap into the funding eligibility and hopefully it will build into a little side business that earns me a little bit too!

Thank you everybody

The barbering sounds ideal, both for now and for building up in future.

JanglyBeads · 15/10/2022 22:32

It looks to me from reading this that you just have to expect to earn the equivalent of 3 months X 16 hrs /week work at NMW:

For extra income I do matched betting and surveys. I do that for an hour before my actual job and an hour after I put the kids to bed and make approximately £600 a month (usually much more).

Profits from gambling (which is how HMRC will class Matched Betting) aren't taxable and therefore wouldn't count for the OP in this scenario.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 15/10/2022 22:44

Surveys you could easily get 10 quid a month sitting on the sofa with your phone. You don’t need to register as self employed till your earnings are over 1k a year though.

kateclarke · 15/10/2022 22:48

Sell books on Amazon. Buy from charity shops and car boot sales. Can register as a business and work as many or few hours as you like.

CassandraBarrett · 15/10/2022 22:53

For £4 a month you wouldn't actually have to do any work if self employed.

Say you cut hair, you have one client, "Steve" and pay yourself £4.
Or talk to work. Could you ask them to pay you an extra fiver a month as PP suggested. Could you give them that extra fiver if necessary?

gogohmm · 15/10/2022 22:56

Local restaurant, pub, shop? Everyone is hiring in my town. Ask at you local churches, many have pt employees eg I work 4 hours a week for one completely flexible
