Nurse to medical secretary?

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice. Been feeling totally burned out by nursing. It's not the job itself but the constant pressure, strain, stress. I won't go into detail but I'm sure those of you who are nurses know exactly what I mean. I work in a ward currently, did look at community as an option but I have heard from nurses I work with that the community workload is just as bad as the wards.

I'm feeling tired of it all and think I'd like a less clinical role. I'm a band 5 currently and there's a band 4 medical secretary job going. I'm pretty good at admin things, I can touch type, knowledge of hospital systems and confidentiality etc. I've calculated the take home pay and it's only a 100-200 less than I currently earn.

I made an informal query to them who said they'd be happy for me to apply despite not having previous experience of admin.
One part of me really wants to, and the other part of me is just scared that it's the wrong decision.

Has anyone got any advice?
Thank you

Go for it.

Research Nurse might be an alternative option to get off the Wards.

Hi Carrofee, thanks for your reply, I would like research nursing but unfortunately I'm in rural Scotland and those kind of positions just aren't really a thing here.

Hi as a nurse myself, it seems alot of nurses are moving out of nursing and don't regret it. I guess it depends on what you want, will it give you a better work life balance? I know the stress will be less, money is not everything if it comes at a cost.
Of course if you really miss it you can go back provided your reg is up to date. Good luck.

Surely as nurse you have lots of transferable admin skills. Definitely go for it.

If you don’t love it you can use your (hopefully much less stressful) time to consider where you want to go next. Play the long game.

Do it. You can always still do bank as a nurse.
I'm in the NHS and am dreaming about getting out.
Good for you for actually doing something.

I know someone who did this and was highly valued by her new boss; she had the knowledge to decipher what she was typing/ writing up etc and understood the treatment steps.

Later gave her the opportunity to flex her hours and yes did help work life balance.

Thank you for the replies. I just want a job where I'm not coming home panicking about something I've potentially missed, worrying on my days off etc. I'm happy to remain part of the NHS but I think clinical is just not for me.
Only thing is, this role is 30 hours a week, and I'm not sure if there is scope for it to increase to 37.5. I must check with them!

Go for it! If you stay on the bank and do a night shift a month you'd easily make what you lost money wise.
That said I know some of the medical secretaries and it can be a different short of C$£p. They get it in the neck from management, doctors, other admin and are the ones patients call to shout out if they can't get seen fast enough or get hold of a consultant etc.
Have you considered being a practice nurse at your GP or doing community where the patients are less sick?

Thanks all, have applied for the job. Has anyone else any more words of wisdom for me? 😀

Good luck. You could also take a look at Civil Service Jobs, for example they have a fully remote Senior Health Protection Practioner SEO role advertised for 36.3-42.481K
