DBS Check

A friend was summarily dismissed from work for exposing a vulnerable adult to risk. If this is referred to DBS, what is the implication of this and how long does this referral take effect?

DBS is for criminal convictions, was the friend referred to the police, charged & convicted?

Otherwise it’s likely to be categorised as a dismissal for gross misconduct. So will be on any future references the old employers are asked to provide.

That's not right.

The employer must make a DBS Barring Referral - formal process - which would potentially be appropriate if the person did indeed expose a vulnerable person to risk. www.gov.uk/guidance/making-barring-referrals-to-the-dbs This is a legal requirement and responsibility, the employer has no flexibility over this.

And if the person is "barred" because of their actions, yes this will come up on a future DBS check if it includes a check of the barred list. Not all do. But it will rule them out from similar positions with vulnerable adults, as it should do.

Dismissals from work don’t get referred to the DBS. It doesn’t work like that. Confused

They do if they meet the threshold for a barring referral. "Exposing a vulnerable adult to risk" is BOTH grounds for a gross misconduct dismissal, and a referral to the DBS.
