Under paid by old employer

Hi, (name changed as I don't want to be outing).
This may be long but I want to try and include everything.

I have gone on universal credit after leaving employment just to tie us over until I can start my business (just waiting on a premises).
When I got my last pay from universal credit it stated that my employer had told hmrc that I was paid £300 more than what I had been. So for instance hmrc had a figure of £678 inputted as my final pay, yet I had recieved £378 in my bank. After speaking to universal credit they have escalated the matter and it is to be looked into properly to see where the mistake lies. Universal credit asked me to get in touch with my old employer so I contacted him to see if there had been a mix up, yet have not received an answer.
I know mistakes can be made but I did think it strange that I had been paid so little (I had worked it out around the £600 mark) so did contact old employer at the time and they said it was correct. I have not got my P45 or final payslip yet so I cannot check. There is no HR as its a little company who only employs a few people, and I have not got access to get in touch with the payroll.
I'm just stressing as it's had a knock on effect of my universal credit payment and I am also £300 out of pocket. Which is a lot at the moment.
I'm not sure what I'm asking, I guess is there anything I can do or anybody I should contact?
Does it sound a little fishy or am I just over thinking things?
If anybody can give any advice that would be fantastic or just ease my mind as I'm completely stressed by the whole thing.

Could it be the difference between a gross and net figure?

User000123 · 09/10/2022 12:23

@@purpledagger thank uou for the reply. Unfortunately not, that was my first thought but no both figures are net pay.

Was it a deduction for holidays taken, or something else that they can deduct at the end of employment? Such as uniform not returned, too many holidays taken, training they've paid for with a minimum time in employment afterwards? They are the most common ones IME, but the holidays is the most likely if it is correct.

Hearthnhome · 09/10/2022 12:41

I was going to ask how many holidays had you taken and how many had you accrued up until your leaving date.

topcat2014 · 09/10/2022 12:44

What date in the month did you leave?
Are you paid for each calendar month, and, for example left on 20th

User000123 · 09/10/2022 13:18

Wasn't the holidays as I took some days off that I was owed instead of it being paid then in final pay. Recieved on training and all the 'unform' I had to return was an apron which we all leave at work anyway.
I was paid on the 21st of each month and received the pay on the 28th this time so they could give all the pay in one go (I think...) I finished on the 14th September.
I'm just a bit confused. It's exactly £300 and I just don't know what it could be.
I'm so confused 😕

So if you finished on 14th did you get approximately 50% of your usual gross pay?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 09/10/2022 16:55

You'll need to see what your payslip says before you can begin to address what might be wrong, unfortunately no one can do anything other than guess at reasons

Would you normally have had a payslip by now, it's seems unusual not to have done. How did you receive them?

Princessglittery · 09/10/2022 23:31

@User000123 legally you must get payslips on or before the day you are paid.

www.gov.uk/payslips and www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/18/part/I/crossheading/right-to-itemised-pay-statement

Email your employer first thing and request a copy of your payslip is forwarded to you by close of play on Tuesday 11 October 2022. Advise them that as per the Employment Rights Act you should have received this on or before you were paid on 28 September 2022.

topcat2014 · 10/10/2022 21:30

But the payslip may only be part of the story.. how was the gross worked out...

I really hate all these shite employers we read about on MN who cannot do payroll :(

The starting point is the payslip and as it’s the one the OP is legally entitled to that is where you start.
