When do background checkers finally stop asking

Long story short and I don't want to be outing (sorry) I haven't handed my notice in yet to my employer because I want to ensure all other checks are passed first ( personal reasons) however the background check company keeps mailing my manager asking my dates of employment, which she keeps ignoring ( I've been told) I've handed all my payslips along with everything they have asked but they keep emailing her. When will they just give in and go back to new employer with their findings? I don't think it's unreasonable to delay handing in ny notice until I 100% pass all the checks as I'm a single parent of 3 kids I don't want to be left unemployed!

When they withdraw the job offer?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 07/10/2022 15:44

Where I work were still asking me questions after I'd started the job! It was annoying but not a problem.

feduphangingon · 07/10/2022 17:02

Really? Gosh! It all seems so overkill

I would not imagine they would ever give up. But also I think it is often not done beforehand, I have had companies complete background checks on me months after I have already started the new job. I would not consider this a risk as I have not lied on anything and all they are doing is verifying dates.

Prinnny · 07/10/2022 17:11

They won’t give up, all checks need to be complete before a formal offer can be made, failure to comply will probably result in withdrawal of the offer.

JonSnowedUnder · 07/10/2022 17:16

Give them the details for HR.

Ponderingwindow · 07/10/2022 17:16

Your manager clearly now knows that you are job searching. The risk now is that the potential new employer withdraws the offer because they can’t confirm your employment. Why not just ask your manager to cooperate?

feduphangingon · 07/10/2022 17:28

@SoggyChipswithVinegar but it's a third party doing the checks, not the employer themselves. They relay all the info back to the employer and have no input on anything

You mean they ask your current employer before making an offer?

Many employers would sack you at that point.

feduphangingon · 07/10/2022 18:12

@topcat2014 they have made me an offer already

Snoredoeurve · 07/10/2022 18:17

Is there something you are concerned about?
Sickness or misconduct?
Or do you mean your current employer is refusing to tell them your employment dates?
They will tell your employer who will contact you -sometimes you have to provide a new referee etc
Essentially there are set periods for waiting for checks/ references, they warn you and then withdraw the offer.

Snoredoeurve · 07/10/2022 18:18

There are conditional offers ( conditional on all checks being completed) and final offer

feduphangingon · 07/10/2022 18:21

@Snoredoeurve I have given alternate references which they haven't contacted plus I have uploaded all my payslips and contract. I had a falling out with previous employer years ago and I was worried that they'd get a kick / see it as an opportunity to bad mouth me ( I've done nothing wrong) but wanted to make sure my reference for that employer went ok before handing in my notice

feduphangingon · 07/10/2022 18:12

@topcat2014 they have made me an offer already

But isn't it subject to references?

LubaLuca · 07/10/2022 18:24

The damage is already done, so if the only thing stopping your current employer from giving the reference is the fact they want to disrupt you because you've pissed them off, just hand in your notice so you can get out of this standoff.

If you're not likely to pass background checks for the new job then you should probably not have gone this far. Or stop worrying pointlessly and do the decent thing by handing in your notice.

Aconitum · 07/10/2022 18:25

Well actually she can't give them your dates of employment because you haven't handed your notice in. She could tell them your start date - present.
Is there a reason why she won't respond? Have you asked her? Can you not ask the company to go straight to your HR dept, although they probably won't tell them either because you are still an employee (is it a GDPR issue)?

Snoredoeurve · 07/10/2022 18:26

Ok its just a matter of time then?
It can take 4-6 weeks at a minimum and you are right not to hand in your notice until all the checks are completed.
Can you contact HR about your boss?
Also people dont write bad references " for kicks" its very dodgy ground as they could be sued.
Usually its just dates

feduphangingon · 07/10/2022 18:26

@SoggyChipswithVinegar yes, but I have provided all the info that I can. My current employer hasn't responded to their email so they have asked me for information which I have given

OP posts:
GiltEdges · 07/10/2022 18:28

Your job offer may well be withdrawn if you fail to complete the background checking process. I don’t understand why you didn’t give HR as your contact for your current employer, or couldn’t still do so now?

feduphangingon · 07/10/2022 18:30

@GiltEdges we don't have an actual HR department we outsource a contractor whose number I gave to the company.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 08/10/2022 09:51

From the employment checking company's point of view they have someone who has either provided false information (because their emails are going unanswered) or who is deliberately trying to avoid the background checking process.

Just tell your boss to respond.
