Just wondering really.

My mom works as an auxilary at the local hospital and has got me an application form for bank work, where i would be able to pretty much choose my hours.

I can't afford to pay childcare so i think the best option would be for me to work fri, sat and sun nights.

So good idea/bad idea ??

I work nights as part of my job, and I am an auxiliary.

I do have childcare during the week which makes it easier. My routine when I am on nights is get in at 7.30-8. Sort DD out and take her to nursery, then I sleep until about 2, but it is hard to sleep during the day sometimes. Then pick her up, spend the afternoon with her, and have an early dinner.

I like them because I get to spend a lot of time with DD, but when I work nights I don't see my husband at all. I also don't get enough sleep so I am tired.

It depends what ward you work on tbh. My ward is pretty busy all night, because we are linked to A&E. Where I worked before this the ward was totally dead at night, so honestly it could be a bit of a challenge to stay awake sometimes!

I also did nights in a carehome a while back, but I was child-free then so it was quite easy. I did miss my days though and it ruined my sleep habits, but I worked fulltime then.

And nutty I have said it before and I am going to say it again, if you want to be a nurse then you have to deal with the elderly, and their bums, but its not a huge issue at night, and its not that bad. I promise!

You don't need care experience as an aux, and to be honest a lot of it will come automatically, but if you are unsure you must ask, and don't do anything you are not comfortable with it. If its not right for you then IME you don't last long in the job.

Im an ICU/HDU staff nurse. Shifts have always been a given. Ive always struggled with nights even before DS.
For many people they are ideal, they never have been for me.
Funnily enough when i walk through the doors at work i wake up sharpish and the nature of my job means that i have to be on the ball every miniute that im there, day or night so i suppose i work on adrenalin (and chocolate).
I do get irritated with the young whippersnappers when they complain that they are tired as they have only had 7 hours sleep. i never say any thing though and i never discuss how little sleep ive had because i would end up getting on my own nerves never mind every body elses!!!

i am applying to work in an old peoples home-fri,sat,sun nights.I like the job i am doing now and think i could go places with it but i would have to fork out so much dosh for childcare in the hols,i cannot pick ds up from school after new year as the shifts change and the house always looks like a bombs hit it!Nights can be yukky i used to be a paed nurse and found nights made me feel abit sick but then they were mixed up with day shifts as well. This is not my dream job but the advantages in terms of being around if ds is ill and having cash for us and being around for the long hols is great. Also i am hoping i might be able to sneak in/or out another baby-tee hee!
Go for it anyway. You don,t know til you try.
Good Luckx

goodness donbean dont know how you manage to do given shifts. i worked for the nhs for 9 years and when i had a baby and came back from mat leave i was treated like sh**e. i dont have any family nearby to do childcare so had to find a sympathetic childminder who would take dd from 7am! she was happy to take them anyday except weds and thurs and when i told wd sr i couldnt do wed or thur she went nuts and told me i was compromising the skill mix on the wd! its not like i was asking for set days or anything, thought nhs was supposed to be getting child friendly

anyway, i handed in my notice and now i do 2 nights a week through a specialist agency. im getting more money doing 23 hrs a week than i was doing 35 with the nhs hehehe. and because my old wd is so short staffed i spend about 75% of my shifts working there!

i also get shifts in wds i would never have seen myself in ie cardiothoracic, a&e etc so im getting more experience and more confidence. doing agency is the best move i have ever made and i wish i had done it sooner! you dont realise how much working in itu teaches you, i never realised how much i actually knew about.

and i love doing nights, it really suits me just now what with childcare etc and its more money!

i have been working nights at care home for 4 years. i am due to have baby in aug 2005 and already have 7 year old son. i work nights as it fits around my son and partners job. i work three nights one week and four another 9pm-7am. wages can be pretty good.i will finish in june and not go back till jan 06. yip pee. i will be returning to work only 2 nights a week. that way if baby has partner awake in night. i have the baby the next night so he gets sleep.two nights i think will be fine till i have some sort of routine.as your body can always cope without the sleep for 36 till your in your own bed again.

i would say to any moms, who have to work to stick with night work. you are there to put them to bed and there for when they wake.

any more advise just let me know.
