I am a year into a junior-level job at my company. I get good feedback on my work, but there is one element of the job that I struggle with/find more difficult than my peers for disability-related reasons. I discussed it with my manager, and contemplated leaving but my manager convinced me to stay and told me that they can adapt the role to fit me.
At work, the job descriptions and career progression are very structured, and the leap between my current role and the one above me is mainly centred around the element I struggle the most with. As a result, I kind of accepted I'd probably never progress as I couldn't check all of the boxes that are in the higher job band.
I met with my head of department, and they were keen to hear about what I want out of the job/company. He mentioned that even though there is a very structured roles and career path, they don't want my disability to limit my progression in the company. He's asked me to think about what I want out of the role, and what elements I like and what I struggle with.
I was a bit taken aback as I wasn't expecting them to bring all of this up to me, and thought they would be telling me I'm no longer suitable/not meeting expectations.
I have a meeting scheduled for next week to discuss all of this. Does anyone have any advice on how to approach the meeting? They sounded very receptive so it sounds like a good opportunity to maybe ask whether they can permanently adapt my role to reduce/change/take away the part I struggle the most with?
