Anyone pay for their own annual DBS update check ?

Work have always paid for our annual DBS update check, as we need a DBS to work. Now they have said they aren’t going to pay for it.
Do others pay for it if work require it ?

I pay for the annual update service as I used to be part of it in a previous job and just opted to continue out of my own pocket.

Current employer would pay for a three yearly check but I prefer to be part of the update service for volunteering purposes.

I need a DBS for work - always have done. Have NEVER paid for it 😱

KangarooKenny · 06/10/2022 07:25

I’m just annoyed that it’s another way of them reducing costs, and it’s going to cost me to work. And we’ve not had any pay rise.

I’ve always paid for mine, NHS

gogohmm · 06/10/2022 07:28

My work pays for mine, but it's 3 yearly. I'm the safeguarding person. No requirement for annual for anyone

Redqueenheart · 06/10/2022 07:56

I certainly would not expect to pay for it...

I have had to do enhanced DBS checks while working for various charities that supported vulnerable individuals and the organisations always covered the cost.

It is very, very shortsighted of them to try to do this.

The last for 3 years and the cost really is not high so they should really be looking at other ways to cut costs.

Celticdawn5 · 06/10/2022 08:06

There is no legal requirement as far as I am aware for an employer to pay for the DBS check. I pay yearly to keep my enhanced DBS up to date.

AriettyHomily · 06/10/2022 08:12

No! I would not be happy with that. Mine has always been paid for.

Nitgel · 06/10/2022 08:14

I have always paid for my update. It's so useful when moving jobs

tranquiltortoise · 06/10/2022 08:19

At my workplace you pay for yourself if you want to be on the update service. My work will pay for a 3-yearly check if you're not on the update service.

Some people decide to pay for it because it's just less faff than having to have a new check. They don't have to, though.

Employers do (generally) cover the initial cost.

OP is talking about registering with the update service once you've got the check, which means it doesn't expire and can be checked more easily by different employers.

It's something like £10 a year.

NannyR · 06/10/2022 09:39

I pay for the update service, its £13 a year.

Work should pay, why wouldn’t they? Very odd set up!

As pp have explained, it's the update service Vs the one off check done 3 yearly. My work would pay for a check but I prefer to be part of the update service.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 08/10/2022 12:34

I've never known a workplace pay for the update service.

I'm not registered on it as I only need my DBS for my current workplace, they pay for a check every 3 years.

If I moved jobs more regularly or volunteered etc. then I would pay for the update service.

KangarooKenny · 08/10/2022 16:42

My company have previously paid the annual update fee. It’s not the money that’s bothering me, it’s the principle.
