Employer being difficult during notice period...

I gave my notice to an employer yesterday (Monday) during the probation period as the whole thing has been a shamble from the start. I have only been with them for 3 weeks so hardly had time to do anything beyond the induction and a couple of small projects. The required notice is one week.

I have a new job already which I will start in a couple of week.

I was expecting to end my work for them on Friday but my line manager is stating that Wednesday 11th October is my last day and they are trying to come up with some other work for me to do which probably will mean they will give me some admin to do which is not what I signed up for.

I can't understand why I can't just finish on Friday instead. I don't even mind if that means less pay. I am really trying to stay professional I absolutely hate the place and I am tempted just to call in sick for Monday and Tuesday.

I am not using this place as a reference either (I would not want to be associated with them anyway...) and it will not go on my CV.

Are there any HR people who can advise me:

  • first of all have they calculated the 1 week notice period right
  • what is the best way to finally draw a line under this disaster of a job.

Hi,

Notice periods start the day after you hand in your notice, so the first day of your notice period was Tuesday. Therefore your last working day is Monday.

Did you give your notice in writing? If not, send an email confirming you handed in your notice on Monday, and your final working day. Just don't go in on Tuesday.

@Hollyhocksarenotmessy

Thank you! that is what I thought to and I even double-checked on the citizen Advice website just now and it also states if you give your notice on a Monday, your last day is the following Monday. Yes, I did send my notice in writing to both my line manager and HR then we spoke on Tuesday morning to have an exit interview.

I really can't believe that they would try to pretend my last day would be Wednesday...

I work remotely so at least I won't need to be in the office.
