They screen patients prior to vaccination by non registered professionals and are often vaccinators. That's the set up here in Scotland anyway!

Depends on the vaccine centre. When I started almost two years ago, as a band 5 I was undertaking patient screening. Sometimes allocated to reconstituting and drawing up the vaccine. We now have a new system whereby the band 5 sits alongside two vaccinators who now do the screening and give the injections. The band 5 oversees their two vaccinators and draws up the vaccine. I preferred the old system tbh.

That's great thank you @AppleDumplingWithCustard and @OnceBitten25

What does the screening involve/is it just a questions sheet?
I have booked myself a bank shift and would like to be as clued up as possible rather than totally useless!

Have you done the COVID vaccine online training? I think it will cover what needs doing under the national protocol.

www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/covid-19-vaccination/

It will just be standard eligibility questions including things like whether or not the person has had a bad reaction etc before.

In scotland we use a system called vaccine management tool which is an online system for registering, screening and recording Covid and flu vaccination.

Registration is generally done at the front door with admin staff. The online tool prompts you which questions to ask then progresses to the vaccination record where you record the vaccine, batch no and site of administration.

If it's your first time there just let the staff know and they will show you how to navigate whatever recording system they have. If you've not administered the vaccine before you will need to have clinical sign off for competency too.

Hope you have a good shift Smile

Same as OnceBitten25 says. It’s all done on a laptop. In theory the screening questions are e-mailed to the patient for them to complete prior to their appt. In practice some either don’t complete this or a glitch in the system means their self-completed screening doesn’t come through for some reason. It’s straightforward once you get the hang of it.

Where I am they just do consent and triage, then send the patient in to be vaccinated by a HCP.

Relocatiorelocation · 01/10/2022 08:58

You could also be consenting under the gillick then sending them to unqualified for the vaccine, if there were an under 18 clinic running.
Make sure you do thr online training and read the latest pgd before you attend.

Thanks all again! And thank you for the links!
Would it be odd if I popped in the day/week before just to get a brief run down of what to do.... or is that over the top/seen as too keen!!

I think it'd be a good idea so you can get familiar with the run of the place and also get any usernames/passwords you need. Then you'll be good to go on the day!

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 01/10/2022 14:20

I'm one. Feel free to message me.

FTMFML · 01/10/2022 17:05

Thank you all so much again, thanks @BryanAdamsLeftAnkle that's so kind- you might find a panicked PM nearer the time! Think I the general idea of what happens now and I will research and do any training I can beforehand, will pop in too! ... better too keen I suppose than CBA attitude!

Read your pgds. Cover to cover. They change very frequently. You really will need to know them. So try to read and sign as soon as a new one pops up. If in Scotland I can help.

Different vaccine types, do your learn pro. Make sure that your up to date with all of your certificates and most of all... Bring a smile, wear comfy shoes. The clinics are busy but we smile a lot and I love chatting to everyone.
