Term time only job vs non term time job

So there's 2 jobs:

  1. Term time only (5am-8am), 5 days a week, (Mon-fri). Close by location, (10-15 mins each way).

  2. Non term time, for a few hours a day (10am-2pm), three days a week, (mon, wed and fri only), location a little bit of a commute (half hour each way).

Jobs are the same, with same rates of pay.

I have a school aged child.

Which one would you choose?

Job 1. It's closer, term time only so no childcare and you're done your work by 8am! No brainer to me

ScoobyDoNot · 29/09/2022 16:25

For the sake of an hour a day, job 1 all the way! Assuming you have someone at home with DC between 5-8am, I'd definitely go for that one.

Term time job

Raidtheice · 29/09/2022 16:34

Do you have childcare for 5am-8am? Would this not be available to you in school holidays as well?

Although the jobs have the same rates of pay, do they work out as the same amount of money in your pocket each month? You would be paid slightly less with job 1. But would presume you'd need to pay for childcare and commute with job 2 that would negate that.

coldcaff · 29/09/2022 16:40

Add up the wages and costs. First job is obviously less income over the year but I'm assuming you have no childcare costs. It could be that with childcare costs during the school holidays for job two, you'll actually end up worse off overall. Plus travelling costs too!

Xmasbaby11 · 29/09/2022 16:43

Job 2. No way would I want a regular job 5-8am! But I'm not a morning person.

SpaghettiSquash · 29/09/2022 16:43

Job one! Close by, more hours and you have all your days free.

Yes DP, does childcare then.
But with non term time job, I would have to use holiday clubs etc. Plus greater commuting costs and more time. It's just the 5am start of the term time job which is tough as I'm not naturally a morning person, and feel jet lagged.
Financially earnings would be about the same, but probably a bit less with job 2, when factoring in childcare for non term time, school holidays.

I would take both personally easy enough to do the 2 jobs around a school aged child plus alot of free holiday clubs are 9am till 3pn

Darbs76 · 01/10/2022 14:09

Both too! Otherwise the first, it would be a lot less hassle than trying to find childcare for a few hrs per day in holidays

AntlerRose · 01/10/2022 14:15

Job 2. I think its more social hours and you get more balance across the year.
Getting up and to work by 5am everday is tiring.

lightisnotwhite · 01/10/2022 14:22

I am a morning person andI hated my cleaning job that started at 6 am. Meant getting up at 5.15 am which meant no late nights. It was always dark and a bit creepy if I’m honest and it was hard work that time of the morning.
No way would I get up at 4am for 3 hours of crap pay ( maybe the £250k early news reader salary)

StillNotWarm · 01/10/2022 15:42

Take both. See which place/people/job/times you prefer.
See what the childcare looks like - don't forget both you and your partner get 5 weeks leave, so not masses of holiday care to find - if you take 2 weeks together, and split the other 3, that's 8 of the 13 weeks covered.

DoItAfraid · 06/10/2022 15:58

Both here too
