NHS pension changes and mat leave

I've just received my letter saying that the % brackets for NHS pension contributions is changing, and that total pensionable income per year will be used instead of FTE pay.
How does this work on maternity leave, where within a single tax year I will have full pay, half pay, SMP, maybe some unpaid time, and then full pay again? I can't see anything in the letter or on their website about whether they're calculating 'annual pay' each month, or if there'll be a system for lowering contributions later if I've overpaid earlier in the year.
