How to say no to work

I was told a few weeks ago that I wasn’t needed beyond end of this month and they we were quite nasty to me. As in don’t give a xxit to put it mildly! This week they have said can I stay on, but they want me to up pick up work I know nothing about not something I’ve done before its not my forte it’s complex and needs training. The person who did this has gone abruptly no handover nothing. My boss is not accepting you need to be shown it I’d be dropped in it with a v short timescale...how do I say nope sorry I can’t do this? I tried but all they care about is that someone takes it on! I was told A knows some of it and can help me turns out A knows zilch and is too scared to say in case he loses his job...so won’t be of any help!

Say as you're leaving at the end of the month you feel that its futile to be trained in procedures that are time-consuming. If they are insistent, ask how you are going to be remunerated for the additional tasks you're expected to carry out.

Also, if they were keen to get rid of you a few weeks ago then you need to consider if you're actually going to stay or not.

You only have 4 working days left! Just leave at the end of the month. No explanations necessary. .

They have asked me to stay on. I was ok to do that as I need time to find a new job. However they want me to take on work which I know nothing about. So they’ve changed their minds and offered me an extension but it’s the short straw in terms of what i’d be doing...doesn’t appeal!

Do you have another job lined up to go to?

ilovebrie8 · 25/09/2022 14:10

Well, you need to decide whether to stay and accept the work that's on offer, or leave if you don't want to do that work. There isn't an option to stay and do what you have been doing to date.

If you stay, then ask to be trained so that you know what to do in the new role.

rookiemere · 25/09/2022 14:19

If you need the money, then you stay on until you can get another job.

Email trail to anyone involved saying you need training to do new job. Unfortunately that does mean dropping A in it, but you could word it as I've been shown how to do this which is 20% of role, but still need to be shown how to do the remaining 80%. Ask them how to proceed.

i agree on proviso A knew some of the job and could show me....he’s come clean and told me he knows zero and only said it to look good. Now I know this am on a hiding to nothing ....he’s a yes man ! Not first time he’s done this in the team...

We’ll it really depends what it is? If it’s drawing blood, for example, then obviously say no. If it’s using the bread cutting machine - obviously that’s fine.

ilovebrie8 · 25/09/2022 21:01

eh! @underneaththeash its a professional role ...complex piece of work that takes months to
learn. Not something I’m at all familiar with
