Tips on writing an EOI for internal position

Just hoping for some tips to get me going. I am currently in a casual role and a short term position has come up. Team leader sent out an email asking for EOI letter, no guidance or criteria, just say why you would be a good choice. It is a small pool of people, all well known to each other, not a large faceless organisation so I know the recipient of the application well. Any others candidates will be in a similar position.

I have never had to write an EOI before and I can’t seem to get anything down. Any examples I find on google just don’t fit at all.

aargh!!! Any tips?

You've answered the question: just say why you're a good choice.

If you can get hold of the JD, it would be helpful to describe how you meet each of the criteria but an EOI is just that; you're expressing your interest. It isn't an application.

Good luck

Ask for the job spec. Also, search your database for the most recent job spec for the permanent role. Then show how you meet the criteria. Make sure you are clear on the word count and whether you can submit additional documents such as a CV / accompanying letter.

For EoIs I've been successful in, I've linked the essential criteria to real life examples that show a range of skills and ability. You want to demonstrate you would hit the ground running and your reason for applying, whether as a development opportunity or because you want to try something new.

Thank you everyone for your time and advice. Unfortunately there was no criteria or job description. Basically we all got an email : x is off sick until the end of the year, anyone who would like to cover the role send an EOI. Anyhow I swithered and time-wasted so much I have had to do a rushed job tonight and have just sent it. Don’t fancy my chances.

I've had this before. Literally sent an email saying 'I'm interested, pls let me know more' and that was that 😆

It really depends on the organisation. I’ve written several but had JD/person spec to help. I would go for a short paragraph on all the good things you have done in your time already, one on why you are interested in the new role and how you think you can bring something to the role.

Have just seen you sent it and it was last month! Hope you got it!
