No medical insurance - compensation?

Hoppinggreen · 18/09/2022 16:21

So I work for a small company, joined last November.
I really like my job and the people I work with. I get on very well with The CEO and MD and know they do value me.
When they offered me the job during salary negotiations they said they couldn’t go above a certain amount but as I had another (genuine) offer they would give me Private Medical Insurance for me and my family. I accepted and it is in my Contract.
I recently asked for details of the Policy as I may need to claim and it turns out they forgot to set it up.
I believe it was a genuine oversight as it’s not something they offer anyone else and the CEO is really upset about it. To repeat I am SURE it wasnt deliberate, the CEO is very generous and would not care about the cost.
So the policy will start on October 1st, 11 months late and The CEO has offered to compensate me but I dont know what to ask for. Luckily we haven’t tried to use it (but were about to) but they have basically breached my Contract and I haven’t had one of my employee benefits.
I should have noticed myself I know and I am annoyed at myself as much as anyone but given that I want relations to stay as cordial as they are any suggestions on what I should ask for?

Why not phone the insurance company and ask what the value is of your policy over an 11 month period?

TiffyTaffy · 19/09/2022 10:48

Did you seriously believe you had this insurance when you hadn’t seen any details or been asked any questions? That’s an oversight on your part, big time.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 19/09/2022 10:50

You will look like a CF, if you have needed the insurance or do in that time it would be fine to ask for them to pay for the appointments.

BTW if you aren’t already aware there is a tax implications with company paid medical insurance.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 19/09/2022 10:52

I’m not sure what loss you need compensating for? The cover is in place going forward. It didn’t exist when it should have done, but you didn’t need to claim. Sou you haven’t actually lost out. And so you could look at it as saving 11 months of P11D benefit you didn’t need :)

Alternatively just find out what the premium would have been and ask for 11 months of that. But I’m not sure I could be bothered personally

TiffyTaffy · 19/09/2022 10:53

I guess if you can’t claim now because the reason for claiming will predate the policy then maybe you’ll need them to cover the cost of whatever care you need

But really you should have checked you had it. I don’t understand how you could think you had an insurance policy when you hadn’t seen details of it? That’s a very, very silly mistake OP.

It is, I completely agree
My CEO has actually asked me what he can do to “make it up to me”. I haven’t asked for anything at this point

The loss is that I got this instead of a slightly higher salary.
I also need to check I haven’t paid tax on a benefit I haven’t had.

I completely take on board the fact that I should have queried it earlier when I didn’t get any info from the provider

The only thing I would be concerned about is whether you have had any health issues since you started the job which would allow the insurer to state it was a pre-existing condition. You can get insurance which disregards pre-existing conditions so I would ask for that.

Hoppinggreen · 19/09/2022 20:40

I was planning to take DD to our GP this week to ask for a referral to a Private Consultant, that’s why I (finally) asked for the insurance details. Luckily we haven’t discussed this with our GP before so it shouldn’t be Pre existing
None of us have been to The GP since last November so that’s not an issue

I think you need to ask if you have a waiting period before you can claim under your health insurance, and if you can pay extra to avoid this I'd ask for that.

Hoppinggreen · 19/09/2022 21:02

Good point @FlipFlopShopInHawaii , I hadn’t considered that.
I do this I will ask for £ too, not on principle but because as I said before I was offered this instead of a slightly higher salary and my CEO has offered to “make it up to me”. I think £1k should cover it, he can give it to me as a xmas bonus if he prefers (and it’s possible )

I don't think tainting the relationship is worth it in this instance - be gracious and move on.

Discovereads · 19/09/2022 21:15

Since it was a genuine oversight and you haven’t really lost anything, Id ask for a token “make it up to me” type thing like an extra weeks holiday, or just keep in mind for next pay raise.

Hoppinggreen · 19/09/2022 21:16

While I agree that my ongoing relationship with my employers is far more important and if i feel it will cause an issue I will certainly let it go BUT I have been asked what I would like as compensation. This isn’t game playing by Management in the hope I will just say “nothing”, I know our CEO and he is genuinely sorry and embarrassed and wants to make it up to me

As I keep saying, I agreed to a slightly lower salary plus the insurance so I think I have actually lost something. BUT not enough to jeopardise my ongoing relationships at work

you haven’t lost anything because even if you had had the insurance for the past 11months, you haven’t needed to use it. So you literally haven’t lost out on anything.

HermioneWeasley · 19/09/2022 21:41

You haven’t lost out on anything. Let it go graciously - you never know when you might want your generosity to be remembered

hayley013 · 19/09/2022 22:06

Most don't have a waiting period, you're covered from the day it's set up. If anything, you've made a saving on the tax aspect. You've not lost out really

This would be my only concern too.

Small company policies often do.

That's true for travel insurance is it the same for private medical insurance? I can see them losing a lot of money that way?

OneFrenchEgg · 20/09/2022 20:01

Googled suggests there is often a waiting period?

We are with WPA (onemedifund) and one can't claim for the first 6 months.
Pre existing conditions not a problem. That's for a gold package if it helps.
