Accepted a job but invited to interview for another

I accepted a new job last week. I've not handed my notice in yet as I am on holiday until next week. All good.

However, I just got an invite to interview for another post. I applied for it ages ago and assumed I hadn't made the cut. But I have. In paper it's my dream job and £20k better paid than the post I have accepted.

Should I go to the interview? The job I r accepted is a step up and very manageable in terms of hours etc. this is important as I have 2 under 5s. However, it isn't particularly exciting.

Wwyd ?

Go for the interview. You would otherwise regret it

dogmum93 · 15/09/2022 22:06

Definitely go for the job! Keep your options open. It's certainly not unheard of for people to accept jobs and then go back on that because of other offers. Just weigh up the pros and cons of both jobs if you are successful in interview.
Good luck!

It's your dream job, and presumably you thought the hours etc were manageable when you applied. If you can do the interview without the job you have knowing, then I would. But I'd be very careful about burning bridges with the place who offered you the job, it will leave a bad taste if you pull out, so you need to be 100% certain you won't want to work for them either now or in the future.

How big is your industry and are they major players? Is it the type of business where people talk?

TaraRhu · 16/09/2022 10:09

Thanks for the replies. Burning bridges is a concern. I will feel terrible if I back out. But I would only do it if the other job has the same perks.

I also have to find out about for the hours in the other hob and if it's flexible. If it's not then I'd have to turn it down realistically as my husband travels for work and one of us needs to be accessible so to speak.

It's a dilemma as one part of me thinks 'why should I stall my career just because I have kids' the other half is like 'for your own sanity it's better to slow down while they are young and demanding. They are 1 and 4.

Anyway, I don't have an offer for the other job so it's not really an issue.

An interview is an opportunity for you to find out about the role and the workplace as well

newjobwhodisperhaps · 16/09/2022 10:16

Go for the interview, if it's a dream job and lots more money you'll kick yourself if you don't!
You may get it, could be the absolute dream
You may not get it, you still have a great job with career advancement and it works for the kids

Go for the interview. In the current climate it is very common for this to happen. Just continue the process you are on. You have one job which you have accepted so I would accept that and set the wheels in motion for it. Meanwhile do the other interview. You might not get it, you might find it isn't suitable and withdraw but equally you might find it is suitable and get offered it. Keep all your options open. These things can take a long time.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/09/2022 10:24

Presumably you haven’t signed anything yet?

go to the interview. Good luck.

TaraRhu · 16/09/2022 11:03

@MrsSkylerWhite nothing signed. It's public sector so will take weeks to get sorted.

100% go for the second opportunity. I'm juggling a few opps at the moment and have already planned to continue to interview externally even if I get an internal promotion.

I am senior and well connected in my field and am hearing regularly about candidates withdrawing from an accepted offer to move elsewhere for more money. If you get that far, your current organisation has the option to improve your salary offer, though appreciate this may be limited in public sector.
