Stay with promotion or go to new job

I’ve been offered a promotion at my current work and also just been offered a new role with a new employer. I don’t really know what to do….

Current role has lots of potential and in long run probably better prospects. However manager a bit crap, overall department very disorganised and need to work with a few a-holes. Could also all go belly up if there’s a change in direction. Have a good reputation though and it’s pretty flexible with work from home and less than 30 min commute.

New place pay is a bit more £ but it is unknown, a longer commute and managing a bigger team in a more specific area which means less potential to move into a different/promoted role in the future. It is also more traditional so not the same opportunity to learn new things….but potential that the environment could be better…..

Just don’t know whether to stay where I have length of service and other things mentioned or try the other more senior role…..any tips or anyone been in a similar situation and what did you do?

What are your home commitments like - do you have DC and if so what ages are they ?

A short commute is always a good thing to have.

Do you have any gut preference about which one to go for ?

ThisOrTha · 15/09/2022 21:32

Thanks for replying, 2 DCs who are both Primary school age. DH has a commute so it’s been helpful being a bit closer. My gut not working for me at all on this one! In many ways I’d rather stay put, but it’s been an awful place to work at times. Though, I’m finding many places are pretty tough to work at!

How much difference in salary?

Any additional cost to commute?

Any additional cost in childcare?

ThisOrTha · 15/09/2022 21:38

It’s around £10k more, so significant but that comes with over 50 additional staff! Commute will be £40 a week more and would need morning childcare, though school have a drop off club that’s only £12 a week.

Perhaps the new role isn't right for you either and it might be better to stay where you are while you continue your job search?

ThisOrTha · 15/09/2022 21:55

That’s a good suggestion. It’s also a good point, not necessarily right to go for first opportunity that comes along!

50 additional staff - that's a lot! How many teams and what's the quality of those team leaders? One or two poorly performing teams, that you haven't chosen the leads for, could make life difficult. Extra salary sounds like £500 a month take home, less £160 travel, so less than £350 a month more.

Worth it? May well not be given size of reports, extra journey etc.

ThisOrTha · 15/09/2022 22:07

I think it is 12 teams with two central team heads. I’ve no idea what they are like and was told at interview part of job would be reducing amount of teams! I think child benefit would go too, so even less in terms of take home pay….. It’s not really about the money so much, flexibility and work/life balance more important for me. There is chance could be better though…..!

I would stay where you are but keep applying for other things.

anon666 · 15/09/2022 22:31

From what you've said, I would stay. There are arsehole everywhere. Unless there is a specific bullying culture, I'd stick with the devil you know.

And the extra 50 staff for 10k sounds like a nightmare

consortiar · 16/09/2022 07:03

Based on everything you've said and future prospects I'd stay.

consortiar · 16/09/2022 07:04

And possible use the other job to negotiate a better pay for the promotion.

ThisOrTha · 16/09/2022 20:39

Thanks for all the great advice. Neve thought about it that way, stay and still keep eyes open! Great suggestions.

Use the job offer to negotiate a higher salary and stay where you are whilst you see how it pans out
