Need to make a decision

So I’ve been offered a new job which is good news. The downside is it’s further to travel and I’m firmly stuck in my little comfort zone of doing 30 mins each way to and from work . They did say that after doing the training working from home is an option so would I be wrong to ask if I could do 3 in the office and 2 at home ? The new job is one hour 15 mins each way. I know I need to leave my current job but that journey is the only downside .

2.5 hours a day? That's brutal. I'd do it if the WFH was in writing at the beginning. Actually, not even then.

Lovelycupofcoffee · 10/09/2022 07:36

My thoughts exactly I think the travelling is the one thing that will make me say no . I checked out the route yesterday and I think it’s to far . But I’m sure there are other jobs out there . Even with a company car I think this would be a no

It depends how much you want this job and what it will bring to your career. Doing a job you really enjoy will be worth it even if the commute is long. Anything becomes negotiable when you are an asset to the company.

Not if it means driving 2.5 hrs/day. Yes if you can go on train/mix walk/cycle & use that train time productively.

PortalooSunset · 10/09/2022 10:04

Dh had a commute (driving) like that and it was brutal. Fortunately it turned out to be short term because they made him redundant 🙄
Are there any other benefits to it (aside from it being just not your current job!).

Chewbecca · 10/09/2022 10:08

Is it driving or train?

It's a pretty normal length of commute into London, I did it for years, 5 days a week. You get used to it. Read lots of books, chat to friends, catch up on the world or TV shows.

The job has to be worth it though, in terms of financially, interest and progression.

magaluf1999 · 10/09/2022 10:11

It would have to be significantly more money for me to consider it. The cost of the commute needs to be covered and also the loss of your free time by some upside. It also needs to be worth it not just 'a job'. Agree with others if you are desperate and its worth it you need a wfh commitment upfront.

Also is it 1hr 15 in rush hour traffic or more?

Lovelycupofcoffee · 10/09/2022 11:17

So it’s driving and u would get a company car . It’s a £6k rise on my current basic plus commission. I currently do an hour a day so this is much longer.

It would be in rush hour

I have a 45 min commute, sometimes takes an hour. I enjoy it as it helps me destress (nhs!!) however only you can decide.

Bear in mind that with traffic that 1.15 can easily turn into nearly 2 hours

sunstoked · 10/09/2022 11:26

It depends on what other commitments you have eg school run, evening activities etc. I left a locally based job for one that was 1hr away, a promotion and hefty pay rise. However, once in the role I found the commute a lot more stressful than anticipated - constantly on edge about being late for work or late for school pick up, and unable to pop out if kids unwell etc They did let me WFH 2-3 days a week, but even with this and the extra money I ended up moving jobs again for something more local. Commute would be fine if I didn’t have young children, but for now being local and having more time with them trumped the new job.

I will have a think over the weekend thanks for all the feedback .

I would clarify the WFH options - it could be wfh home 5 days a week in which case easy?

you could also ask if any of the training induction was online. These are normal requests in the current job market - you shouldn’t feel weird about asking the terms before accepting. If they want you they will accommodate, or say no and at least you can make an informed decision.

Lovelycupofcoffee · 10/09/2022 17:05

@TinyKittenPaw i asked about wfh and they agreed to 3 at home and 2 in the office. I will have a really good think over the weekend.

Decided not to take the job . It’s to far for me to drive each day and although they said I could work from home for 3 days after training I prefer being in the office full time . 3 hours driving each day is not for me .
