When do I resign?

OK so I've never done this before as I've been in my company a long time.

I have received a job offer with a fixed start date, further away than the end of my notice period. It's about a month further away.

Do I wait to hand in my notice or do I let my employer know now?

Note that I am the only person who does my role in the company so it may be beneficial to give them an additional month. I am concerned that they may say thanks and let me go after the end of my notice period and I would be without a job for a month.

It depends if you want to take any time off before you start your new job.

I wouldn't give more than your required notice though and don't resign until you have a contract and or written offer.

Just give the 1 month notice.....or maybe if you like 5 weeks (but nothing longer)

PrinceOfPegging · 06/09/2022 15:53

And always make your last day the Sunday before your Monday start. Extra pay if salaried!

wouldukissafrog · 06/09/2022 15:53

I tired to do the decent thing recently and offer more notice than required, I felt I was helping giving longer as my actual notice period was abnormally short. Backfired they only wanted my contractual notice and I was out of pocket. Do what best suits you!

It depends how reasonable they normally are. I have given more than the required notice before and it was appreciated as they could get someone in and me do a proper hand over. But if they are likely to be dicks about it just wait and give the required notice.

Thanks all.

The nice in me wants to give them the heads up but I don't want to lose out, so I will hold on to my notice and give them the required 3 months.

I may have some extra time off over Christmas, I've just gotten the formal offer today and awaiting the contract so plenty of time to decide.

I would tell them I have another job I intend to take and tell them I will hand in my notice a month prior so they can be forewarned to allow them to find a replacement you can train up a bit

I had this a few years ago when I only had to give a weeks notice but I wanted to give a month (due to a booked holiday). I went and spoke to my boss honestly as I knew giving a week would leave them right in the shit. He was lovely and said yes please give us the month it will help no end. Phew for me! But always a risk obviously.

Do you have the sort of relationship that you could talk to your line manager?

goosebuster · 06/09/2022 17:26

Not with my line manager, it is an odd set up. I talk to him regularly but wouldn't say we have that type of relationship.

I do have a good relationship with HR and have told her about precious interviews as a friend but I was approached about this role and they were very clear it was P&C so I've not mentioned anything so far.

I'm just waiting on my contract, new employer has stated it will be with me today but all looks good to go.

I have a 3 month notice period and a start date in early January. Had planned to resign early Oct and finish mid December before holidays but now feeling very guilty making plans and arranging things into the new year knowing that I will definitely not be involved.
