Paying back a work bonus not entitled too

Hi,

Another silly question but one that will be a good learning curve.

Anyone any experience paying back a bonus that you feel you ought not have?

The bit more than a couple of hundred pounds bonus was taxed so can / will payroll just produce an invoice?

Many thanks

Why would you want to do that? It doesn’t sound like you think it was an error on their part but just that you don’t deserve it, is that right?

Hi,

Thank you for the advise, I was just trying to keep this as basic/simple as possible. I fear I might be accused of fraud but I really didn't ask for a bonus and as I feel generally awful, but at the same time I don't want to give up a permanent job for fixed term, I want to give it back.

Basically I started a fixed term contract with what looked like a nice company from the outside, within days of starting I (and everyone else in the company) suddenly got quite a massive bonus and increase in wages - my employers expectation of its new employees was said to go up basically in the first couple of weeks I was then told it had to be mindful of who it passed during training. That was the first indicator I truly missed that all things were not well.

The training was awful, I had a trainer who allowed me to make mistakes because their mind was on promotion within the company and didn't prepare me much beyond the first 4 weeks, would not answer questions I had about the department and role so I felt set up to fail, to this day I will never understand all that greatly wasted time, it got to the point where it went over the trainer and I landed up being spoken to on the cusp of the first month by clearly mistakes would come to light - at which point and the one time when I probably should have said here is my resignation, but whilst I was deflated and down, I wanted to keep in the job until I'd found something else in short which I now have done - however my notice has gotten political I feel / making it as difficult as possible, and I just wonder if this receiving of bonus won't be helping.

Sadly and whilst I did think it very weird the bonus came without restriction terms but even so I want to return it for my sanity. Lots of crazy things go on at the company, really generous leave which people cannot fit in so you end up with leave declines and unhappiness and there isn't enough time to talk to your boss because always short staffed, all sorts, total lesson learnt when an employer seems to good to be true.

I don't think handing back your bonus will resolve any of these issues, so I'd keep the money.

abovedecknotbelow · 06/09/2022 16:59

Why on earth would you return it? Are you generally a martyr?

GetOffTheRoof · 06/09/2022 17:25

Keep it. They've given it to everyone else as well.

If you're desperate not to use it, donate it to a food bank or an organisation close to your heart and be pleased you can help.

Work your notice
Keep the money (sounds like it's not an error)
Leave (congrats on the new job) and don't look back

If you really don’t want it I’ll send you my bank details and you can give it to me as I sure as hell need it right now!

Is it an airline? Sounds very familiar.
