So I have found myself wanting to return to teaching…I’ve been out of the UK for 12 years and honestly it’s like another planet, don’t get me started on paying for things by flashing your phone 😳
anyway can anyone please advise me on the best way to go about getting clearance to return to work and advice on supply work etc? I’ve already signed up for a return to teaching advisor but I feel like I know so little I want to be a little more clued up before I speak to her if that makes sense!!! Thanks in advance!💙

First of all, it's not CRB it's DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service). All the information you need will be on the website.

If you join a supply agency you can get them to sort the initial DBS.

I'm on the update service which is something like 15 quid a year so that you always have a DBS that is current (although many jobs still apply for a new one for you anyway).

Whatever you do, be aware that sometimes it's like passports and can take weeks upon weeks.

Yeah I get that I was just hoping for some hand holding and real life experience...

Not a teacher, but have a DBS for work and volunteering with young people. Be warned that depending on when you moved back to the UK, you might need to get a police check / certificate from wherever you lived. I had to make a couple of trips to the embassy in london of the country i lived in to get it sorted.

Thank you-do you have any idea if you then ate committed to taking an appointment with that same company? I have been so confused by a supply agency advising me that i can effectively 'be on their books' but as a self employed person? This is so new to me I wouldn't know where to start etc. have literally uprooted my life (and kids...) to return to the unknown... so daunting

Oh gosh... if you can, tell me was it straight forward? Had you worked previously in that country?

It was straightforward but a pain. I had lived and worked there for 3 years so it had to be declared on my return to the UK.

This was around 10yrs ago - i had to go to the embassy in person, fill out a form and pay a sum (something like £20 i think?), the embassy then obviously did some admin with the police force in the country i was living, then about 6 weeks later i was called to go and pick up in person (no posting allowed! 🤯) a letter confirming that i didn't have any criminal convictions in that country.

I would REALLY hope that now it could all be done online but i suppose it depends on the country in question?

You can join a supply agency and pick and choose which Jobs you do if you so choose, there's sometimes schemes where you agree to work wherever and whenever they choose for the security and you get a guaranteed income. I've never fancied that as the point of doing supply is often the flexibility

winewolfhowls · 03/09/2022 21:50

There's a Facebook group for supply teachers that is busy and people may have some good advice for you there x

You will have to list all your addresses for the past 5 years, so if that includes places outside the UK the checks may therefore take a bit longer.
You have to evidence your current address with paper documents - online ID (bills, statements etc) is not accepted.
