Job evaluation and pay increments/scales

I work in local government and am asking for a job evaluation. If the job is regraded as the grade above, im assuming that as I'm at the top of my grade that I would be put on the top of the next grade, does anyone know how it works as I can't find any information online about it.
TIA 😊

Hello,

I work in HE but the pay structure is similar to local government. When regraded, you will probably be put on the bottom rung of the new grade. Unless you are already earning more than that, in which case you'll be put on the next rung above what you're already earning. I think the exception is if you can get the regrade backdated a few years, then I think they have to take into account years of service since being on the new grade.

Thank you very much. I am a bit confused about it as it would mean someone who has been doing the job for 3 months would be on the same pay as someone who has been doing it for 10 years. I assumed that if its evaluated that actually we are on the wrong grade that it would just be a straight switch to the same increment of the next grade.

Your organisation should have a policy on this you can access. Im in the education sector working for a LA and I found all the relevant info online when I was benchmarked and regraded.

I agree that it doesn't seem fair, but the date that the regrade is effective from is the date that you start the role on that grade. Everything before that will have been deemed to be work at the lower grade. Unless you can get it backdated some years.

As the PP has suggested, do see if you can find any official policies on this to confirm for sure.

I'm in HE. In my org, you'd either go two points up the scale or start at the bottom of the new grade, whichever is higher (as some scales can overlap between grades )

I wouldn't be expecting to go in at the top of the new band

Have you read the regrading policy?

For most LAs you need to show your role has changed to the extent that you will be regraded against TWO categories so both finance AND staff management, or working environment AND knowledge, for example.

If your application is successful, and it's around 12 weeks for the process in my organisation, you will start on the bottom of the new grade.

Someone who has been in post, on that grade, for 5+ years will be at the top of the scale and earn more than someone at the bottom.

Thanks all, I think I understand now and that makes much more sense. I think I was coming at it from the point of view that the job has changed massively since it was last evaluated and that was many years ago! Good to know about where we would come in on the new grade, now I just have to make sure we get it...

What tasks are you doing over and above what is in your job description? That is what the regrading panel are going to look at.

Is your line manager supportive of the potential regrade?

If you are a member of a Trade Union they will be able to provide lots of help and advice.

If you have been in post on Grade 3 for 5 years, and your colleague on the same job description has been in post for 6 months, if the role is regraded you will both start at the bottom of Grade 4.
