Promotion that I'm inexperienced for

I've been working as a receptionist for about 3 weeks for a newly opened office. Our team leader (also new) worked 2 days on the job and left for another job with more hours. There's 5 of us on the team and we where all 'interviewed' by the manager to step into her role. During my interview I said I didn't have experience of the role but I answered the questions based on my management diploma I gained about 2 years ago about how to lead, motivate etc .. I was given the job. I'm so nervous now as I feel I've got all this responsibility on me. There is a pay increase. On one hand I'm thinking it's a chance to develop my own career.. but I've never been a supervisor covering when a manager is away.

My attitude has always been that by definition you have no experience when you get promoted, because it's a promotion to something new. If you need experience to be able to do a job, how then would anyone ever get a promotion or a new job!

You clearly have the skills and potential for it, as identified by interview and working with your team leader in your prior role - that tells you all you need to know about whether you can do the job.

You'll be amazing!!

They saw something in you that they didn't see in your colleagues hence why YOU were chosen. Congrats, you'll do great!

Well done! You did a management diploma so of course your qualified! How many managers or supervisors have you ever thought were really truly excellent at their job? For me it's none! As long as you're trustworthy and reliable, that's all they'll care about, the rest you'll just get better at with time

Well done :) .. the people who've promoted you know you and understand what the job requires, and will understand there are some areas you need to grow into.
They wouldn't have promoted you if you couldn't do it - you certainly can, and will learn the stuff you're not sure of as you go along.
Great stuff OP!

Don't forget it's perfectly acceptable to ask advice if you come across an issue you're not sure how to deal with, or if you want to run past management anything before taking action.
