Can my employer change their mind about me not working my notice period?

Ok somewhat urgent. My final day is today, going in late morning.

I have been let go from my job as there is a lack of work for me, all fine and semi expected. I was told o was going quite suddenly on Friday just as i was leaving for the day and i agreed with my boss that i would come in Tuesday (yesterday) to discuss further and confirm everything, again all fine.

Monday rolls around and i get an email saying not to come in on Tuesday and to come in wednesday (today) for an exit interview and to say goodbye!!

This is baffling because i have left work unfinished and i expected to complete this and pass it onto others in the next few days but i have confirmed with then that i don't need to come in any more.

My boss is (or should be) aware that there is some work in progress. i have this in emails i sent saying what was outstanding.

Now i don't really care about not passing stuff on if they don't mind but I have a few questions.

a) im planning on discussing the outstanding work during my exit interview so they can at least make a note of it, is this enough or should i do something more formal?

b) Now they have said i don't need to work my notice, can they take this back if they want me to finish the work off? i am making commitments elsewhere, applying for work and don't want to be called back even though it will still be within my paid notice period.

A note to make is that i may be returning there to do freelance work covering my old work once they have more for me. It just isn't enough to sustain a job at the hours i worked. Their intention may be just to cut me out to save the expense asap but then all me back on their terms.

You need a date in writing saying when all employment benefits cease. They need to calculate holiday pay etc so I’m sure you won’t be left in limbo.
re a) I’m not sure what else you can do.
