Annual leave for part time staff who work on Mondays in the UK

I am starting a new job on 31st August, 3 days a week Monday to Wednesday only.

Full time staff at the organisation get 25 days leave a year, plus bank holidays.

I have been told that I will be entitled to 15 days, plus bank holidays.

For the period 31/8 to 31/3/23, I have been told I will be entitled to 11.5 days (plus the 3 public holidays that fall within this period).

Does this seem right?

It actually feels like too much to me, which I know sounds a really silly complaint - but I don't want to suddenly be told, oh we worked it out wrongly, you've actually only got xxx days.

I think the thing that makes it seem wrong is that as I work every Monday, surely I am getting more leave in real terms than those who work, say, 3 days Tues - Thursday?

I make it 9 days plus bh, assuming 7/12 of annual allowance.

Yes, I thought this too. I'm confused! I don't want to ask too many questions as a newbie in case management suddenly see an error, and cut other people's leave allowance. How not to make yourself popular in new job! Hmmm.

Full entitlement is 33 days (25 plus 8 bh). Your entitlement is 3/5 of this - 20 days.

Between now and next August, 6 bank hols are on a Monday so you will be on leave then, leaving you with 14 remaining days.

Sorry I see you wanted the first 6 months entitlement. Which would for a full timer be 12.5 plus 3 bh (3 of which fall on one of your working days): 15.5. Your entitlement therefore 3/5 of this which is 9.5 less the bh which fall on your working day, so 6.5 days.

Full entitlement is 28 days.

It's 5.6 weeks for 5 days worked, any less is pro rata.

Oh I'm sorry I was stating statutory leave, not OP's 🤦🏽‍♀️

Different places do PT bank holidays differently.
But a tough estimate is to calculate your total leave, including bank holidays then pro rate.

So 25+9 (as we had the extra jubilee bank holiday this financial year- your work may well have just done the normal 8).

Then pro rate both for being PT and for being 7/12 of the year.
This comes to 11.9 days (11.5 if you only count 8 BHs).

Then if a bank holiday falls on your working day you have to deduct it from your leave allowance. If not, you get to take it some other time as general leave.

I would calculate this in this way although there is no hard and fast rule. It just needs to be consistent.

25/5*3 = 15 days for annual leave over 12 months

8/5*3= 4.8 rounded to 5.

Total of 20 days for the full year or 20.5 for this annual leave year due to the extra bank holiday.

As you're joining part way through the year then I'd calculate the leave entitlement from 31.08 - 31.03 entitlement to be 12 days. That is made up of 8.8 days holiday and 3.2 days for bank holidays

(Also assuming annual leave year is 1st April to 31st March
