I hate my current job, I have only been there for 3 months but I dread every morning and my boss is a bully. There is the option to work in the same place but lower down, the job itself will be easier but I’ll still be around my boss. I took the job as my children go to the school opposite so I don’t need to waste money on fuel driving.
my other option is a different job the other side of town, I’m not sure if it’s suitable for me yet but it has a good wage and more flexibility than my current job.
so would you leave a job you hated just for the sake of your mental health risking lower I be one or would you hold on for the money?

Lower wage not ‘I be one’!

I’d be looking for a different job. If it’s your manager that is making you hate work I’d be looking for a new employer. If it’s the work that’s shit I’d be looking for a different role.
Do you get benefits like universal credit or tax credits cos the reduction in salary may cause an increase in UC ow working tax credits. Try a salary calculator and a benefits one lie TurnToUs they’re are pretty accurate.

feeling shit because of work isn’t worth your happiness

Working with people you hate will get you in the end. Leave

Chickenwing2 · 15/08/2022 19:45

You need an option 3! Look for another job that is similar to the one you have, but no bully boss and not a lower salary.

Im also only 3 months into a job I hate and am waiting for at least 6 months before moving on, as it looks bad on a CV to be somewhere for such a short time (6 months is still bad but I am miserable)

Public organisations often have flexible working patterns.

All the best in finding something more suitable!!

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/08/2022 19:45

Look for another job. There is a massive recruitment crisis out there and its a job seeker's market. There has never been a better time to job seek.

carefullycourageous · 15/08/2022 19:46

I would be happy to take the job the other side of town, get away from the bullying person and out of that company.

You can find something else in due course.

Never stay somewhere with a known bully in situ - if they haven't tackled it so far they are not going to.

I was miserable in my job when I was younger. Fortunately with the help of my bf I found a new role within the same organisation. Best decision ever getting out of that job.

Darkness22 · 15/08/2022 19:48

Another job. I've just done this after 2 months.

MarpleFan · 15/08/2022 19:49

I left my job for the sake of my mental health and I will forever be thankful that I did. I had to make some compromises for the next one, but it was the best decision I have ever made. No job is worth being in that place for.

Fernie2022 · 15/08/2022 19:58

Hard one, I suppose least you can say you've seen and know how current boss acts. (people leave bosses don't they, never truly believed that until this year)

I know when I had to consider a well paying fixed term with lots of perks against a living wage paying but permanent role with knowing I would have to pay out for car parking, I remember thinking how lucky I was in a way not to know both companies better at the time, as it would have been a total risk/jump from the pan into fire and my bad luck if I then hated the perm role, having never really known how the fixed term one could have gone.

I have left a job before to aid my mental health, but again I kind of knew the role wasn't me / I couldn't do it no matter how much I was paid.

Thanks everyone I wasn’t expecting so many responses!
I do get a small amount of child and working tax credits, to be honest it’s not about the money for me at this point it’s about feeling content where I work, so if I do struggle financially for a bit I’d rather that than continue to be unhappy. I’m glad to hear others in this situation got out and felt better for it. I could take the same job elsewhere but I don’t enjoy the job itself either, my boss makes it unbearable otherwise I’d grin and bare it. I could go back to my previous job although it was self employed and not very secure, I was happy there.

Some good news, I have been offered the same job I am currently in but with a different company. Slightly better pay. I am currently using up my remaining holiday and will need to give 2 weeks notice which means I would have ran out of holiday and need to go back before I leave. Is it unreasonable of me to not go back? I still need to attend the interview but as I was ‘picked’ I’m hopeful I’ll get it as I have the relevant qualifications etc. Am I doing the right thing? I don’t want to be left without any job! Bit nervous about handing my notice in anyway as I’ve witnessed how passive they become and will demand to know why, I’m not sure whether to be honest or fake a reason? Help!

Also what’s the best way to explain to the new company why I’m happy to leave my current job after such a short time!? I don’t want to go down the route of saying I wasn’t happy and treated badly etc as I’m worried they’ll assume I’m a moaner!

Just say you want to work for their company and you think the opportunity looks interesting. No one cares - people are desperate to recruit. Make up a positive reason and trot it out.

Thanks
