Feeling sick about job

LondonGirl38 · 02/08/2022 12:16

I am currently shaking like a leaf, with no idea what is happening with my job.
I started a position in a company in April.
I have been working all hours god sends, evenings and weekends included as the workload has been insane. Ive done everything my boss has asked of me. I THOUGHT i was doing a great job until last week just gone when he said it wasn't working out - completely out of the blue. Even though i've been killing myself every week to go above and beyond, he hasn't seen it.
Since then I've heard nothing. Ive asked for an update but ad no response and i am beside myself with worry. I'm now sat here wondering what to do - i don't think its fair that i am being left hanging - am trying to get on with my job but i'm panicking - I guess there is nothing to say in terms of advice - i just don't understand what is happening.

What a shitty situation for you OP! Do you want the job still? If so you might want to make a list of everything you have done during the past 4 months and cross reference to the job description. How well do you get on with him?

LondonGirl38 · 02/08/2022 12:31

Really well! There's been no indication i was doing a bad job - and honestly, i would say if i thought i had but ironically i was internally congratulating myself on how hard i've been working. It came as such a shock. He reeled off some things he thought i hadn't done - when i had. I didn't stand up for myself, i just went silent in disbelief. I wish now that i would have defended myself but i didn't - now i cant eat or sleep with worry and i am being ignored. This has huge personal and financial implications if i am to be fired - but i need to know either way as am in limbo right now and it's awful - i feel sick

Put everything in writing to him in an email. We met...... You said that I hadn't done this.... Here is the evidence that I have etc. Ask for a follow up meeting again.

I am wondering if this is just being used as an excuse to get rid of you. It sounds horrendous.

Start looking for another job immediately.

LondonGirl38 · 02/08/2022 12:47

Thing is, he said i'm a great fit for the team, culturally. I get on so well with everyone in the company, i've been present, working together and gelling with the new team...then to hear that it's not working out literally stopped me in my tracks. Either way, i'm being fired, i just don't know when...or really why.

You have mentioned a couple of times how hard you have been working, but you haven’t really mentioned results or output and seem to be assessing yourself on hours done. I am just wondering (to try to figure out why you and your boss are not seeing things the same) if your expectations are misaligned in terms of quality / quantity of work.

How has it been left anyway? I don’t think it is acceptable to say to an employee that “things are not working out” but not be clear about where they stand and what happens next.

Whitehorsegirl · 03/08/2022 19:52

You should not be working on a job evenings and weekends.

It just shows that either you are not really up to the job or the job itself is simply impossible to complete in the contracted hours...

Also a good manager would have addressed this early on. During the probation period they should have been catching up with you on a regular basis so that they can give you feedback on how you are doing and address any performance issues.

To me in sounds poor practice on the employer side and not a job I would want to be in anyway if the workload is that ridiculous.

Look for another job.

yellowcarpetflair · 03/08/2022 19:55

Working hours way over contract can seem like a good idea to show commitment etc but in reality, it can show poor time management and organisation.

Have you had regular line management since April - what was the outcome in those conversations?

hattie43 · 03/08/2022 19:58

What a horribly guy to say something like that and keep you hanging . You have every right to find out what he means .

AhaLyn · 03/08/2022 20:58

What’s going on with you working all of the hours you are? Why is the workload so high? It’s very mean of him to drop a bombshell and then go quiet. I would quietly look for another job as it sounds a bit crappy.
