Want to leave the law but what else?

Everyone always says lawyers have "huge transferable skills" but I am struggling to find something to transfer to. I watched the pit pony video for teachers and seems like teachers can go and do tutoring in their own time which brings in some income. Is there a lawyer's equivalent? Just want to escape the immense stress and the rat race tbh, don't mind a pay cut.

Can you set up your own firm? What area of law are you in?

Ncfreely · 02/08/2022 03:22

I just really want to get out of law, that's the thing.

Look on civil service jobs. There will be lots of policy roles your skills would transfer to.

HR jobs are good if you know your employment law.

I know a couple of lawyers who head non-profits. What do you care about?

Watchthesunrise · 02/08/2022 04:33

Regulatory? Eg competition and consumer regulator?

Watchthesunrise · 02/08/2022 04:34

Public policy?
Public Trust?

Climate change and social justice. Hadn't thought of that.

Delectable · 05/08/2022 01:19

Following cos I'm in a similar rut.

dontyoubother · 05/08/2022 01:58

I know several teachers who are former lawyers. If you fancy a different flavour of stress and pressure.

Froodledo · 05/08/2022 02:05

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has a law degree. When she met her husband she was working in advertising.

Soma · 05/08/2022 02:09

Teaching at the University of Law or BPP.

AtLeastPretendToCare · 05/08/2022 19:36

What sort of law do you do and what level PQE? Are you London based?
What sort of money do you need to earn?

This is a very common situation but above will help focus down.

AffIt · 06/08/2022 15:05

You will have at the very least 'soft' transferable skills such as attention to detail, negotiation and good presentation skills, as well as knowledge of your personal field, so that's a start.

I work in management consultancy and we have a lot of former lawyers, but it is quite a high-powered / stressful environment, so maybe not what you're looking for.

Perhaps a business support role, such as compliance / operations / procurement, rather than client-facing?

Minta85 · 06/08/2022 19:11

Working for legal publishers doing editing or proofreading?

RockaLock · 06/08/2022 19:19

Company Secretary? I think lots of cosecs are ex lawyers.

SamVan · 19/06/2024 12:58

OP curious to know did you figure something out?

Ncfreely · 20/06/2024 22:59

Hello! I did. I am still doing legal work but in a tribunal decision making setting and don't have a practising certificate. I feel such relief. Not been doing it long but so far so good :)

Oh interesting! Not heard about that before but it sounds interesting. I’m glad you found something right for you :)
