I used to think to get on at work you have to work hard . I was always told hard work brings rewards . I don't think it does . I think if your liked that gets you ahead more so than talent / work ethic . I've seen so many people who are not really up to the job but are liked/ feared . They are usually lazy too.

to Really progress you have to do both.
it isn’t “work hard” so much as “Get a lot done efficiently”, and includes get others to want to work with you.

Likeability is a huge factor for success at work. You need to be able to get on well with others, and people have to enjoy being around you.

However, you do need to work hard. Often, hard workers tend to be liked as people know they can rely on you and they can trust you to pull your weight, to meet deadlines, to support them.

There will always be people in positions of power who do very little. But in general, I'd say work hard and treat everyone with respect.

I think being someone people can get on with is genuinely important, who likes working with difficult people?

But yes I agree that hard work is not always important. People like to feel good, someone who works hard but rubs people up the wrong way is unwelcome.

Emotional intelligence is immensely important. Particularly if people are being fast tracked for management or leadership roles, it’s probably more important than their skills at the say job.
