Dh's boss

He phoned in sick today as he has a cold. It's the first time off sick in about a year. His boss went on about how they wouldn't make target for the day cos another employee is off ill and could he come in this afternoon. Essentially laying on thick with her woe is me.

She does this everytime, she will then tell the rest of the staff that the person off ill was probably lying. However, it's ok for her to just waltz off for a hour to do some shopping.

DH is pissed off with boss now. He want to make a complaint. Anyone any experience or advice?

Erm, she's the boss. She's supposed to manage her time and other people's time as necessary - so if she chooses to go shopping in a quiet period, as long as the targets are being met, complaining will just make your DH look like a whiner. If she is bullying her staff, though, it might b worth having a word with human resources: though how seriously they take your DH's complaint will depend how much of a problem her department has with skivers and lead-swingers anyway (not saying your DH is lying, but if some of his colleagues are regularly throwing sickies because they want to watch the football/recover from hangovers etc then her attitude becomes more understandable).

If she is talking to the rest of the team about people who are off sick and saying that they are lying, that's not professional or appropriate behaviour. If she does this about everyone, ie not just DH, it's something that could be raised by him or one of the team. If they have one-to-one meetings with her, someone could say that they feel a bit uncomfortable with her discussing other members of the team in that way when they are off sick.

Is that someone DH or someone else in the team might feel they could do? Making a complaint to her manager will make him/the rest of the team look like whiners as madamez says unless there's more to it, so trying that option first might be the best bet.

Her waltzing off shopping is irritating, but again I really wouldn't see that as something meriting a complaint to the senior manager. It sounds a bit like telling tales, and is unlikely to endear him to anyone.

I think it's best to leave the management of this person to her line manager, deal with the slightly unprofessional whingeing about team members being off sick between them, and if it gets worse or a chat with the manager doesn't sort it, then consider complaining further.
