Charity job flexibility

I volunteer in an office of a local charity and one of the staff left two weeks ago which they are still trying to recruit for (apparently very little applications).

I do pretty much the same things as the employed person was doing and I would like to apply for the position but there is two sticking points which I’m presuming they probably can’t/won’t shift on.

It’s advertised as 37.5 hours but due to shockingly poor availability of before/after school clubs (and childminders) in our town I could only do 9.15-2.45, so 25 hours/week. Obviously if this changes then I could increase hours, or I don’t know if they would allow me to work extra on some days once I get home from the school run (just have DC(7)).

Also it states that you need to be a car driver to visit their charity shops occasionally (I don’t have a license) but I’ve only known one of the staff to visit another branch once in the few months that I’ve been there. I wonder really how necessary this is. Not possible for me to get a license for medical reasons.

This section of the charity’s business has rocketed in the last two years and I’d really like to join them as an employee (they have often said I’m one of their best volunteers, could be a porky I know), but I’m guessing the hours and drivers license will see me discounted instantly?

Could you have an informal chat with the manager? They might prefer someone who is already familiar with the set up, so less training required. The driving might count as a reasonable adjustment. Is public transport an option ?
