Can I work two jobs?

Following on from my post yesterday I’m now considering taking on another job on top of my current job.
My current job is quite unprofessional and to be totally honest I don’t think my boss has a clue. I do not have a contract to see if I am allowed to work a second job or not. I currently work the equivalent of one day a week and sometimes I do over time. The second job that I really would like is 2 days a week. So I would still only be working part time and I don’t think I would go over the £12,570 tax.
just wondering if this is allowed or is totally up to my employer(s)?

It depends on your employers. Normally a contract will say you can't work a second job without your employers permission but if you don't have a contract just ok it with employer two.

Normally there's only an issue if you're working for people who have conflicts of interest or if one set of working hours impacts the other.

I work two jobs , just split your tax accordingly.

FuncaMunca · 22/07/2022 18:32

If you don't have a contract that prohibits you from taking a second job and doing so won't stop you from doing your first job properly, I'd say go for it

Never heard of back t being able to work multiple jobs. I've always had multiple part time contracts at once made up to effectively full time hours.

It'll send you mad, but it also doubles your job experience and I've found I've progressed faster in my career than others

How do you split the tax accordingly? Is it something the employer does or would I need to get in contact with hmrc?

You need to contact hmrc . Tell them what you will earn at both jobs and they allocate the tax code . You can do on the government gateway, it's very simply.

Your tax codes will be split automatically. Are you in need of my hours OP? You stated its unprofessional I would keep quiet but if asked I wouldn't lie either... do what's best for you

You need a contract by law OP.

I had a contract when I started in 2009. I have left 3 times on maternity leave and I left (thinking for good) in 2014 but re started with them in 2015 and I was never given another contract to sign. I’m also doing a different job to what I started out doing in 2009 too, although still the same company.
I want to ask HR for a copy of my contract and see what they produce but at the same time I don’t want to raise any suspicions.
